My Sunday Afternoon

We got a call about 1 p.m. from a local guy saying he had made a cut from the top of a 30' extension ladder and it pinched his saw. He said the tree is leaning towards my house......IM SCREWED! We got it down in 2 picks. Took longer to setup the crane than to do the tree.

Did you sell him the saw too?

Not that one, but hes coming down this week for another new one! Guess business is picking up for him?

The homewoner (who is a local cop) asked his buddy (a cop for a city 45 minutes away) to help him. Guess that wasnt the best idea? There were multiple other pines, much smaller, with the same awesome backcut with NO notch! Hahaha

Help me decipher the picture...

Did he make the face cut then make the 'back cut' [Jerry Beranek called them Salami cuts] below the face? Was he expecting the tree to tip towards the camera?

He went up on a 30' ladder and put a "notch" in it with a huge bypass. He then started about 18-24" ABOVE his apex with his backcut in a downward motion. The tree, as you can see, had NO growth on the front face. How he thought it was going the way he wanted is a mystery. His notch was also crooked and sideways.

Just to give you an idea of the size of the tree. I cut right where his "notch" was. The top weighed 5500lbs and was about 50-55' in length.

Two picks?

Would that be the top he messed up on and the bottom stem below his notch?

Nice work!

Yes. We could have easily one picked this tree, but it was obviously not safe to do so.

hey Boston. How much addrenaline did you have going through you on your way out to that job?

Rushing around. Trying to get there before the tree falls. It had to be crazy

The tree is what it is. I was more excited to see the actual set-up and the mistakes. On the phone we were told a 130' pine! I did a 100-110' pine less than a mile from here last year on a storm call, so 130' was plausible.

With the cranes we have, especially after seeing how close of a set-up we had, I don't get nervous. I always get excited though! Anyone who does crane work and tells you part of it is NOT for the adrenaline excitement is LYING! I Love the adrenaline factor!
