My first tree job

Back in about '66 I got to help my next door neighbor Marv and his son on a tree job. Steve and I were buddies so it was a hoot to do "man's work" and get paid.

There was a cottonwood growing right next to the house between the windows. They notched out the eaves to clear the tree.

This is a picture of the house we lived in at the time. When I looked out the upstairs bedroom window I could see the Burger King lights about six blocks away. The two cottonwood trees have kept that catalpa dwarfed these 41 years.

Both of the cottonwoods were topped by Marv. My guess is that would be around 35 years ago. Both of the trees are in reasonably good shape and have survived many windstorms. When I bought the house from my folks I did a bit of pick pruning but nothing substantial.

During the summer of '76 I dug up the two ash seedlings that are along the right side of the driveway. They were about a half inch diameter and 15" tall.

Always nice to go back in time and see how trees have performed. It's a reminder to us that these living things can't dodge anything and are constantly at nature and man's peril. Nice pictures.

Mr. Dunlap,
Thanks. I'm sorry that I'm going to miss such a good opportunity to meet you this year at the TCIA show, especially when your going to be so close. /forum/images/graemlins/boohoo.gif
