Mushrooms at base of honey locust

Thanks Mrtree for the Fungi Magazine reference. I might have seen it before, come to think of it, but I'm not too tuned in to the enthusiast community. I'm trying though, something to do in retirement, perhaps. I see some solid workers contributing articles!
Great!
As for the original post, now that some time has past, ID from a physical sample is likely easier. I agree that it could be Inonotus. New, immature Ischnoderma can have that look as well. Would that make a difference in the action plan? I'm not so sure.

You need to join the enthusiast community, no stranger bunch of people.

As for ID, while it is important to know for white/brown/soft rot most definitely need to do investigation of cross-section no matter what species.

Yes, getting the sod off the trunk is a really good idea. Just exposing the flare might tell you the extent of the infection on the outside. I would not recommend invasive testing to determine in interior DK, unless that was really warranted. Honey locusTs typically have a low center of gravity, and risk of toppling is low to start with.

It does look like in a notice, but it might be something else too. Many trees grow for a long time with Anna notice infections. Just drying out the flare will inhibit the spread of DK.
