It doesn't just slip over, it does take a bit of manouvering.
Think a tyre getting fitted to a rim. Get an edge started over and work it around rolling it on. That should get it onto the first part of the gate. Then gate thickens slightly at the knurled grip, pass over that slowly to avoid abraiding the fibers. Maybe need a bit of water based lube!
I don't think the gate would be big, DMMs tolerances on hardware would be tight. But i can see how an extra stitch or 2 on an eye could easy happen.
It would cost more to send it back than it's worth i'd guess, unless the seller is willing to pickup the cost.
Wherever you get a replacement from, ask them to test fit a revolver first.
