MS361

Thanks Tim. I too love the full wrap. It's common amongst us West Coast guys. Each of my saws, other than my 200T has a full wrap.

I gotta tell you I am a West Coast guy, born and raised & live in Northern CA. where alotta logging goes on. The Full Wrap is good for felling timber where your final cut is well above grade (see your avatar for an example) But for doing back yard tree jobs the full wrap gets in the way for making those low stump cuts to minimize the grinding out of the stump.
Even 4 inches can add alot of time to grinding out the stump

Agreed. The full wrap comes into it's own on uneven, sloped terrain where you may only be able to work a tree from one side, due to slope or underbrush or whatever. Fortunately, that usually isn't an issue in backyards.

the 361 is a very nice running saw and does make good power once opened up. I like it better than the other stihl's cause it has spring mounts and I find it alot easier on my hands than the rubber mounted saws

I've got two 361's and love this saw. One has the three hole muffler mod; and, the other has a neat 'ported' muffler by ehp. I'll try and post a pic of it now. Tom

I know this is an older thread, but I just bought an MS361 this week. I gotta say that this saw is great. I like the bigger dawgs that Jeff has modified onto his saw. I find that the stock single dawg is way to small for felling.

The saw pulls a 25" bar 3/8" full skip just fine in the softwoods of the PNW. I have felled some decent sized trees with it without a hitch. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not sure if I wanna mod the muffler on this thing. I am happy with it in stock form, but more power is always nice!

Gary, open the muffler. It's easily done, and this saw needs it....plus it sounds better! My buddy's which is not opened sounds significantly different. Mine being throatier and deeper. Runs alot cooler as well.

Welcome to the Buzz Gary.

Jeff

Jeff,

Can you explain what you have going on there with the muffler mod. What is holding the screen in place?

Thanks,
Jay

Well then check out this muffler mod I just did.

Gary! You Naval Dawg!

Woof!! Woof!! HA! /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Hi Butch!

Jeff, I am still kinda leary about modding the muffler just yet. I know it will give the saw more power, but I don't know if I wanna mess with it. I like the power it has and it suits my needs so far. I'll run a few more tanks of fuel through 'er and see after that.

Or maybe I need to take a trip out to the Pen and try yours? /forum/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

Later, Gary

Open 'er up, Gary. Stihl's are severely restricted, compared to pre EPA days. The saw will run cooler, and develop 15-20% more power if you let it breathe.

Also, I suggest 40-1 mix ratios, and perhaps even a full synthetic like Mobil's excellent Racing 2T, which can easily be mixed at 36-1 or richer with no carbon buildup as could occur with dino mix.

A good discussion is here: http://www.treebuzz.com/forum/showflat.p...;gonew=1#UNREAD

Now, you might not want to make the saw look like this:

That's the spark arrestor from my 200T, so it just sits in there. I did peen it down a bit to make sure it stayed put, but that's it. The bracket it rivited to the muffler, and that's all there is to it.

No hurry. Let it get broken in, and then do it. It does make a difference. Like I've said else where, my buddy has one which is not opened, and we cut side by side alot (not racing, just working) and you can tell the difference at a glance.

i havent used the 361 but i have ran a couple hundred tanks of gas through my 260pro in the last 4 years and the only thing i have had to do is minor carb adjustments and a new bar and oil cap. i know it probably doesnt have the power of a 361 but i would think it would be better all around, especially in a tree. i run a 20inch and it doesnt phase it. actually thinking about modding it sometime soon.

The 260 won't even compare to the 361... 361's out here in the PNW normally wear 25" bars and run full skip on them.

If you get one... you will love it.
