ms 290

So my father inlaw bought me a new ms290 farm boss about a month ago . It's a nice little saw but at 13 lbs I would like a lil mo powa. I've been reading thru posts on here and elsewhere about muffler mods and have yet to find one for this specific saw. I have never modded a saw before and always have a mechanic do carb work/ tuning. I would like to try my hand at it but have no clue other than I need to let the saw breath and richen the carb. Exactly how I do that, or if it will have desirable long term affect...I'm in the dark. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Did u take the time to break it in properly....was it cared for before u got it? Did you mod it at all? Mines a slow overweight pig right now, but I've been doing some research and I think I can get some decent gains from simple mods I can do on a rainy day in the garage. Soooooo, any one have any tips? It's gonna be my first mod.

30 min muffler mod and gain about 20% quicker cut times. More power and runs cooler as it can breath and retune carb richer.
Last MS290 I did came out to 23%.

Remove muffler, drill bigger the 2 tiny slits, put another betweeen those 2. Put 3 more on other side across from factory ones and then right inside the baffle drill 2 5/16" or bigger holes. Use drill or dremel.

Retune carb. Take drywall screw and screw inside red limiter and pull straight back and off.

Quick easy and no need to pay some idiot a $100 for a muffler you can do yourself for free in 30 mins.

TJ I read on another site some mixed reviews about breaking in new saws ...it was also said that they may gain a bit of power after being broke in. I do not have a strong opinion about the matter. What I do know is that my 290 after the mod and tuning rips! Before if I would push it into wood it would stop the chain. Now it will just keep rippin. And it sounds cooler too. Joshua my 290 will cut the pants off my 260 pro...I do like the 260 for light work better because it is a bit less to cart around. Bottom line the saw I was given as a fathers day gift is a good medium sized saw...after an easy modification its a pretty sweet saw, especially to get as a gift!
