There are some really nice looking small utility vehicles made in Europe. they are like two seater panel trucks. the back has a raised roof with barn doors so there is lots of cubic space inside. Add a rack up top for pole gear etc. and it would make for a great work vehicle.

Tom,

Are you talking about something like the Ford Transit Connect? They'll do 50 miles to the gallon, some folk even pimp them up with alloys/spinners etc, lol!

There good little vehicles for carrying climbing gear, saws and doing estimates etc, but as for towing a trailer? they couldn't pull the skin off a banana.

Kawasaki KLR 650, great little bike and looks more like a dirt bike but is an adventure bike. You can also add some hard bags to the rear of it.

I agree, great bike, excellent visibility, sits you up real high to see over the traffic and they never break down, well mine didn't anyway.

Apparently, the US military made a diesel version of the KLR which can do 200 MILES TO THE GALLON! There is talk of a civilian version of the diesel being made now, keep your eyes peeled.

Here's the military version -

I've been doing my estimates on a bike for three years now.I don't show up in chaps and all leathered out.I ride an old 82 Kawasaki 305 thats factory with none of the bling.I always wear one of our company shirts and talk to them the same as i would if I stepped out of the work truck. I'm sorry but with gas going over 4.00 I'm gonna ride to do the etimates.I only get about 47 mpg.

I'm trying to downsize at bit more every month, peel away the habits and items that won't fit inside a 43-foot space that's dedicated to other needful things.

But I'm convinced this week I'll go and find a scooter. If image bothered me so much I'd keep on wasting fuel to satisfy a cosmetic need, I'd also have surgery to transfer some muscle down to my manhood.

Gee, somebody who makes sense.

Thank you, Jimmy. I sat down and thought about how I use my truck, and I realized that probably 2 days of nearly every week, I come back to the shop with a bed full of brush where I just pole sawed a limb off the wires or roof, or grab a handful of small brush, or stop and work with the crew and toss all the chunks of wood in my truck so it is not mixed in with the chips in the back, etc. As much as I was hoping to justify buying a bike, I now know that my best option would be to just drive my truck a little easier than I do. I have chatted with several people over the weekend about the image thing and I think it would have a negative effect with customers, even though you all know like me that it shouldn't. Thanks for all the input, bye bye motorcycle dream.

As you can see the Ural is a very non-typical motorcycle. It is more in the category of an antigue car as far as how people respond to them. We literally do not go anywhere in it that people do not come up and start a conversation with smiles. It is also very practical and economical for running errands.

It is the only motorcycle my wife truly enjoys because she can relax and enjoy the scenery and still chat with me.

I love the look of the Ural GearUP - That's definitely on my wish list now!

Plus, I could ride it in parades!

The Ford Transit Connect is a smaller version of the Transit panel van from Europe. It is slated for US sales in 2009.

This verson should fit your ladders and pruning poles!

Hope you are able to get it. Urals are a hoot!

One of the things is that when you pull up to a stop sign or light, you don't have to put your feet down...you don't tip over. Talk about posh!

Very insightful Reed.

I'm gonna post a for sale ad on the bulletin board at the mega-church for my Excursion, (after I peel the stickers off). Then I'll ask my employer to swap my F-250 for a hybrid. After I sell the Excursion I'll quit the church and go back to drinking excessively and smoking dope. I'll see if my doctor can hook me up with a script for some Valiums, before I sue him of course. I'll need them now that I'm worried about my carbon footprint and the thought that hilary might not be able to fix everything.

I've got a new vision.

I think you've nailed it down pretty well.

Perhaps you can think of investing in Diesel engine mods to reduce your fuel consumption.

I just bought this for estimates, but I came to the conclusion the customers would want to keep some of their lawn...

It's acutally 110 mpg, but that's still incredible.
