really consider a scooter. It has less of the renegade, loner, punk, conotated with one. They make really nice scooters for pretty cheap and that can travel highway speeds. I think there would be less image issues with a scooter than a motorcycle. I understand not wanting to show up looking like a biker.

Like Jim Steele said: He does estimates on one day of the week. I set aside Fridays for my day of bids.

On my voice mail I ask people to give me their name, address, and phone number. The reason for this is because when they give me their address I can look up where they live and plan an efficient route. (I kind of try to make a loop around town').

Since I live N.E. of town it would be foolish to do an estimate everyday after work. I would be going back and forth multiple times.

Sometimes, if I plan my bids well, I can have 2 minutes between bids. Fuel efficient and I can get in more estimates in one day that way.

What do you look like showing up on a scooter? Better then a stereo typical biker? doubt it. If people want to be petty that is there perogitive but first impressions are important right or wrong.

I think the concern with the motorcycle is that you may give the impression as a risk taker, outlaw. A scooter is kind of nerdy which in reality is a Quality that i think sells jobs. Nerds make more money than anyone. nerds ride scooters. they are not threatening to the customer which a motorcycle definitly is. I think it would be appreciated.

I posted the factory demo link on the Ural just for the amusement factor, because I think those guys are nuts. Tho' it does show how tuff these motorcycles are. But as far as an image goes, this link might be more appropriate.

As you can see the Ural is a very non-typical motorcycle. It is more in the category of an antigue car as far as how people respond to them. We literally do not go anywhere in it that people do not come up and start a conversation with smiles. It is also very practical and economical for running errands.

It is the only motorcycle my wife truly enjoys because she can relax and enjoy the scenery and still chat with me.

I've not read this whole thread but I'm just adding my experience on this issue.

My old boss bought a Ducati ST1 or 2. Its a sports tourer, but to laymen its a flash red motorbike. He used it for quotes (bids) as he said it saved him time in the traffic and was economical ish to run.

He'd wear the full black leathers and scare the crap out of the customers!!

I know he lost work from it, in fact he went bust eventually. It wasn't just the bike, it also representing him losing the plot/midlife crisis etc and that ultimatly ruined the business.

The customers expect a tree man to turn up. If you can achieve that on a bike then go for it, if not then it won't work for new customers!

The smart car, Yaris or as MB suggested a Mini. They're all weather vehicles and will save you tons on gas. It will also make a positive impression on the client that you're doing something more "green". The bike is limited and can lead to a wrong impression depending on your client demographic.

Ive been doing bids for about 7 years and I actually purchased a chevey cobalt to save gas(36mpg).As I started doing my bids in the car I noticed how many times I needed a truck. In fact it was costing me way more than I saved.Alot of the estimates I could do right there on the spot and throw in the back of the truck or I needed the bed to carry larger equipment to drop off with crew. The car was driving me crazy dozens of jobs I could have done on spot- now I send out the big chip truck and its a 2nd trip boot.Truck for me forget image its pratical and will save you more money in the long run.

What about something like a s-10 ora ranger. still a truck but that 4-cylinder motor should save you some fuel $. It could even be an extended cab so you could carry a small amount of gear w/ you. or put a tool box in the back.

yes noel, i read that your 6-4 and a small truck wouldnt be much different than a car, but you'll get used to it.

Oh wait a sec now....get that extended cab as mentioned above and take out the drivers intended seat and sit in the back! Like Hitower in 'Police Academy'!
