Morbark chipper

I am looking at possibly buying another chipper, and at this time I need to buy a smaller machine unless I find a really good deal on another machine. I have found a Morbark M6R that I know little about, I will be inquiring about it tomorrow. I'm just curious of anyone's opinion of this chipper if you've used it, and what would you be willing to pay for a well maintained unit? I'll give more info such as hours and year of machine once I find out.

For what it's worth my current chipper is an Olathe 182 6" disc.

I've never owned a drum chipper, what difference should I expect in productivity vs my current machine. Both are 6" chippers with hydraulic feed. Olathe is a vertical feed wheel, morbark is horizontal. Morbark is auto feed where olathe feeder was controlled by hand.

Any info or opinions are much appreciated. Thanks

I tend to chip right up to the capacity of the chipper. On a removal with a 6" chipper I feel you almost have to.

I agree. Since starting this thread I found a gas powered 12" brush bandit in the same price range. My only concern is the condition of a 12" chipper that is priced the same as a used 6" chipper it also isn't being sold local like the morbark, so inspection isn't nearly as easy.

I used one once wasn't really impressed the auto feed was constantly kicking in. Even on not so big stuff. It's better to feed then the vermeer 6 but definitely seemed slower. I wasn't chipping into a truck only on the ground right next to the machine but it seemed like it wouldn't have the balls to fill any truck.

I followed up on the M6R, it is a 2009 with 560 hrs with a 27hp Kohler.
I haven't called about the brush bandit yet.

If your doing a fair number of removals, 6'' is your bottle neck. They're great for pruning jobs though. If you decide to steer towards doing mostly pruning then jump on that morbark.

I wouldn't have less than a 35hp engine on a 6" chipper. My ideal for a pruning and light removal machine would be a 9" machine. Older Vermeer 935 or similiar.

We tend to get a lot of removal .

I've called about the 12 inch, it's a mid 80s brush bandit (unsure of the model) has a 4 cyl ford industrial engine, auto feed and is within $400 of the 6" he's assured me that everything on it works as it should. Of course I'd test it out before making s purchase.

So I guess the question is, buy a newer 6" or older 12" , or keep looking.

what is your budget?

At this time I'm shopping around for about a $5,000 machine. I know that's really low for bigger chippers and I couldn't buy a new 6" for that, but both previously mentioned chippers fit that price category.

I'm currently only doing tree work on weekends and some evenings and to date, have kept out of debt while buying equipment. It's not the fastest way to big, shiny, brand new equipment; but it cuts down on the stress of having to make a payment and I own all of the equipment outright. My goal is better used equipment to increase productivity, until my profit margins and savings can afford even better equipment and possibly new or like new.
