Morbark chipper

i own a 2007 m6r i love it. it is not the most efficient chipper, but it definitely beats stacking brush. the main reason i purchased mine is because it is small enough(1700#) that i can chip and tow it with my nissan frontier. the other thing i have noticed about a good deal on tree equipment is the sticker price is usually only a small portion of what it will cost in the long run

That is currently one benefit of our current setup, our olathe pulls great behind a 1/2 ton chevy. You don't even know it's there. That frees up my bucket truck that I chip into to go and dump without having to unhook at the dump site. Also with the ability to back it in with the smaller truck and the rotation of the infeed, we can maneuver it into some pretty tight areas for chipping.

other thing i love about the m6r is that it has auto feed so there is no need to stand by the chipper while its chipping. I definitely approach cleanup with the 6 inch unit different than i do with a morbark 2400, but overall i think its a very efficient chipper on a small scale

So I just completed a job with a rental chipper while mine is down, a vermeer BC1000XL. I loved it compared to what I am used to, now I'm all confused on what to buy. :)

With smaller chippers it's all about horse power and sharp knives. There is a greater promotional difference between a 20 hp and 30 hp compared to an 80 hp and 90hp. Personally I wouldn't even look at a machine with under 25-30hp, in the 6 inch range.

I hate most vermeers. I'd pick a morbark or bandit first. Rayco makes a good chipper as well.

Any paticular reason why you hate vermeer? This is the first 12" I've used and thought it did great, but this machine also only has 160 hrs on it and I have nothing to compare it to. Vermeer is also the only local vendor that I'm aware of around here.

Run a bandit or Morbark 12" you'll see what we are talking about ! Blows the BC1000 away! No stupid bump bars or gay electronics either !

Resist the friendly salesman. Try other brands . Make an informed decision.
deevo is right. First time I fed a bc1000 I couldn't believe it. It choked on a 5" spruce top. I had to back it out and limb it. Would not pull it in. Tiny feed wheel teeth slipping.

I suppose the bump bars was my only complaint, although it wasn't much of an issue. I would like to try out some other brands tho.

I think I will try the other brands first, this one was pulling in 10-12" pin oak limbs, only a couple of them needed trimmed up to fit.

Vermeer bc1000 is inferior to morbark 12 inch, but if the price is right i would buy one in a heartbeat. i have used one for years and it never had issues. most morbark chippers will cost you much more than a bc1000, just buy an older one without the bump bar

Vermeer is fast food. Like going to McDonalds for good food. Besides I hate horizontal feed wheels with a passion!!!
Like Oroboros said they lack pulling power. We use my partner's 1500 and it's not that much better on pulling power either. As mentioned the electronics are a flat out joke. Right side feed wheel stops moving with no jamage behind the wheel. Run it in reverse for a bit and it works for a bit. Check the tension on the winch line .... its loose, even though it hasn't been used in days. When loose the machine thinks the winch is in operation and doesn't engage feeding. Then you have the issue of when a chunk of wood gets jammed behind the feed wheel and against the wall. Instant stop.

Edit: And no hydraulic crushing power.

If you are at capacity with a 6'' often you may want to step up in capacity.
X2. That's a red flag if you're already chipping at capacity, because a 6" chipper won't easily accept a 4" log with a strong crotch any more than an 18" chipper will accept a 12" log with a big crotch. Make sense?

My vote is older 12" over newer 6", everyday, unless you are TRULY only going after pruning jobs, which you already stated you weren't.

So it would appear that this thread is now mis-titled but the quest for a new chipper continues although I may be getting my 6" repaired soon.

What is your thoughts on a woodchuck 17 with a ford 300 straight 6? I've read a bit about them on this site and others, but as time goes on maybe parts availability has changed?

Just thought I would give an update on the search for a new chipper. I ended up getting a woodchuck wc17 with a Cummins diesel engine. Needed a little tlc when I got it, but I would say it is comparable to the vermeer 1000xl that I rented previously. Just without the extra electronics and auto feed. One thing that I have noticed is with the torque of the diesel vs gas, the auto feed wouldn't get used much anyways. I've hardly slowed it down, and when it dies it is quick yo power back up. Having the larger chipper certainly speeds up the brush cleanup. Thank you everyone for your help
