In the end the capitalist abandons it for greener pastures
[/ QUOTE ]
that is very true, people are left not knowing what the hell to do with their lives when an industry dies due to changing technologies or is moved to another part of the world where the labor is cheaper.
For many people that car plant or factory was their life, their families life, their community's life. The industrialist packs up and moves on and leaves nothing but an empty shell.
Then, many of the workers move to another place to find work, the old community left behind becomes dysfunctional, people feel lost, useless and worse of all, hopeless..... many of them resort to drugs and drink to blunt their senses....crime rises.
This is the brutal side of capitalism, it's not survival of the fittest, it's survival of those who can best adapt to a fundamentally selfish system. To thrive in a capitalist society you have to be selfish to a greater of lesser degree. Unfortunately it seems the more selfish you are the more success you will have. Thankfully many people make a success of this system because humans are fundamentally selfish beings.
It's not called the rat race for nothing.
