Mistletoe, any cure?

Prune it out at least a foot below where it's emerging. That won't cure it, but it will slow its progress. Eventually, it'll overtake the tree regardless.

Look it up dude, you have the whole interwebs. (that's what my Momma would say... except the interwebs would be encyclopedias)

I'm wondering if you can eradicate it they same way as ivy or bamboo. Don't allow any foliage to grow until it runs out of reserves. You'd have to climb every year to prune off the new growth.

Guy M. prunes it off and coats the cut with pruning paint to deter re-sprouting.

i was more interested in if it can be stoped or slowed down, but u already answered...ya and ur right my mom would have told me to look it up too,but i would have had to go the library, but ill hit the web tonight tx :)

You'll have to prune most of it out and then you can spray Florel in the spring. Florel doesn't kill the mistletoe, but it kills it's flowers, which prevents seed production and spread. That's the best that's out there for mistletoe management.

If you're in the SE USA with leafy mistletoe you can put a red bow around it in December and have cute little kids sell it for $5 a bundle, believe me, people will buy it. If you're out west with dwarf mistletoe, sorry, no one wants that crap.

We see it in Paloverdes out here. I have seen it come back much thicker after "removing" every litte bit just buy stripping it out by hand and cutting the larger clumps.
If there is a way to keep it at bay, Id sure like to know about it.

yes if on big branches just scrape off all the green and paint it black. Duct tape also works. no the tree does not have to be mutilated! SA please search the isa journal for research before saying treatments are so limited when they are not.

Florel, well...

ya ive seen it a # of times and ive prunned it,but honestly i needed deeper info and i got it,yup i know a thing or 2 about that parisitic, water and nutriet sucking vampire and jesse im the one who called u about a week ago i meet u at the geezzers and got ur # from scotty remember u introduced me to ur mom about 5 times it was the joke of the weekend cool mom of course u also got some good vids....blue boots dont know what u mean

Wow guymayor you're all over my case today aren't you?

Well, what I said earlier is what I learned after I fell off the proverbial turnip truck. Some of this information wasn't around when I was directly dealing with mistletoe, or at least I wasn't aware of it. You learn new things every day right? That's why communication is so important.

The University of California and Colorado State both still recommend Florel treatments, here are links to that information:

http://www.ext.colostate.edu/PUBS/Garden/02925.html

However, this paper on leafy mistletoe was published in 2006 in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry says that Florel does not give as much control as what guymayor was saying, which is basically using light-exclusion to kill it. Here's that article:

Strategies and Treatments for Leafy Mistletoe (Phoradendron tomentosum [DC.] Engelm ex. Gray) Suppression on Cedar Elm (Ulmus crassifolia Nutt.):

&& well i am all about options for tree care and it kinda pushes a button to hear someone who advises say they are more limited than they really are. it's a green plant, so shading it out kills it. todd's paper was not the first on this, but i hope the next includes duct tape cuz it lasts longer and is not so messy.

&& also big difference between alc flux and black lesions, and a lesser but significant dif tween dwarf and leafy mistletoe, so the CA and CO papers are less relevant to a poster in AR with phoradendron; good to check regions first and also to consider that U papers may be biased to chemicals cuz they get $ from the mfrs (and you can take that acronym any way you like
