Minnesota Ex Pats...but anyone is welcome

It looks like you 'city folks' hijacked this board about Minnesota! I am 25 and see coconuts and the southern cross, and let me tell you that flipping the seasons is uneasy on the mind, as if us Minnesotans need any more seasonal ineffective disorder (sic)!

Growing up on the shores of Lake of the Woods was much different from the experience in the cities, but the natural side of the state is something that we all share; those clear lakes, marathon road trips, ole and lena jokes.

I've been around the US quite a bit, and it seems like Minnesota is a place unlike any other. Hey, as anyone here posting been to New Zealand? Now, it seems that NZ and MN have very similar human cultures??? IMO

Spicy,

Come on...jump in the canoe and join us on the trip down Memory Creek...is that "Creek" or "Crick"?

Run out some memories of MN. I wonder how many people know about the NW Angle? Pretty odd bit of treaty making!

A good friend of mine who lives near Bayfield now was in NZ last winter. I asked him to get me some "Hillary dollars". Now I have to go up to Bayfield to get them, he won't mail them to me :)

I'll ask him how he feels about the NZ/MN cultures.

Bay of Islands, Westport, Lake Taupo, the Tana Mahuta, and the rest done best while MN freezes. Best night of my life at the Duke of Marlbourough Inn.

Whatta you doing down there, working?

Couldn't find too many similarities between Sven and Alfred, lot's of the British Isle expats and decendents of banishment. Gardens that blew me away and facial wrinkles that indicated a life of comfortable joy and sincerity. Every little detail like door hinges and toilet valves - not big box store imports but made with pride and quality, there by people who seem more real. Never a toilet with only one flush option, and we claim "we're number one??"

Rented a Ford F-150 with a Aussie V8, righthanded. Got 29-34 miles per gallon (I get 11) and explaining this 'weirdness' at the petro stops, people thought I was tripping on LSD...they all got that kind of milage which makes me wonder about us here.

I remember Friday nights in the cold nights of January, walking into the arena in the daylight, watching the first period of the junior varsity game, then heading to the locker room to get ready for the big game. As the time would get closer to 7 the crowd would start to get louder, then the countdown to the end of the j.v. would begin. After they shook hands, we would take the ice, hear the pep band belt out old songs like 'hang on sloopy'. As children we would dream about this day when we be the one who the crowd would roar for!

After warmups, the zamboni would take the ice. We would head back to the locker room. We would again take the ice, this time for the player introducts. It was always an honor to be a starter, to get your name called as you skated to the blueline without a helmet, your hair left to blow in the breeze.

And the game! It was usually an emotional affair, as it can be imagined as 15-17 year old boys battled it out for honor and pride. Sometimes we would win, sometimes we would lose, but those memories are still very strong from the those cold, winter nights.

Dunlap, you want some hillary dollars. I could bring a few back with me and mail them to you, but it will cost you at the current exchange rate, which is around 100 NZD to 60 USD. It is better than a bank, because I will not charge any interest on top and I could pluck it from the current stream of financial transactions.

Oakwilt, yeah, working here for now. Was looking into getting jobs in Texas, well south Texas on the Rio Grande (fiance teaches there for now), but looking like we might set our sails for Oregon.

Your post about NZ was interesting. I would have to disagree on the goods made here though. Yes, if it is made here, you can count that it is made with utmost quality. Yet, you would be amazed at how little of what we buy here is made here. The work environment is very relaxed in NZ. It took awhile to gain the patience that is needed here, because things just happen at their own time.

Take care fellow Minnesotans,

Spicy,

Thanks for the currency exchange offer. The week before Expo I'm going up to Bayfield to see my friend. Hopefully there'll be snow and ice around! Maybe even get out on the XC skiis! I'll get the Hillary bucks from him then. He said that he wasn't going to mail them, I had to come up to get them. Fair enough!

Great story about hockey. I'm not a sports fan but it sure felt odd when Norm 'Norm Sucks' Green snuck the Stars out of town. Now, whenever I see buddies with Stars gear on here in Texas I ask them how the South Stars are doing. The world was out of balance during the time that Minnesota didn't have an NHL team.

Have you ever heard the Gear Daddies song, 'I want to drive the Zamboni' ?

Well I went down to the local arena
Asked to see the manager man
He came from his office, said, "Son can I help you?"
I looked at him and said, "Yes you can..."
I want to Drive the Zamboni...hey
I want to Drive the Zamboni...Yes I do!
Now ever since I was young it's been my dream
That I might drive a Zamboni machine
I'd get the ice just as slick as could be
And all the kids would look up to me
I want to drive the Zamboni...hey
I want to drive the Zamboni...Yes I do!
Now the manager said, "Son, I know it looks keen
But that right there is one expensive machine
And I've got Smokey who's been driving for years."
About that time I broke down in tears.
Cause I want to drive the Zamboni...hey
I want to drive the Zamboni...Yes I do!

Long overdue.

Cash Call sounds like it was a real time-eater on those morning show segments.

"A pair of Choppers"?

You shouldn't disturb a Minnesotan while he is cutting firewood.

That's a good find Dude!

I've been to Fat Nat's, it's the new hot spot up on the north side. So much food that not even I can finish it.

And I've been known to pass up a beer for a good piece of pie.
