Minnesota Ex Pats...but anyone is welcome

Taylor's Falls, seemed like all day to drive way up there.
Diving (I only jumped feet-first) off the cliffs.

Afton used to have an ice cream stand, the old lady who bent over and scooped also had a chronically running nose. It was a right of passage to go there and eat a double scooper, with seasoning.

The first 747 landed at Wold Chamberline Field, we saw it approach. I remember Northwest Orient Airlines flew out of there with Constellations and DC3's...bound for Japan. Barnum and Bailey's came to town and their steam train spurred and unloaded elephants near the Sears building on Lake Street.

Hubert Humphrey talked funny and looked even funnier. In person, as a little kid, he scared me, as much as having a clown approach us at the circus. I didn't meet a black person until late grade school, and she was from Africa, visiting. I was captivated by her hair, never seen anything like it.

Lake Street later became our hangout when we went mobile. Hot cars and loose chicks, one needed to get the other. Looking and touching was the sought-after goal, no one worried about pregnancies because we never went that far..yet.

Tom,

Does this bring back memories? Koala Water, Celery Soda maybe?
I never could find that stuff but you always had what seemed to be an endless supply.

How about Spring Grove pop? It's been around for about a century. Dad says it hasn't changed since he was a kid. Strawberry is the #1 seller. Made with pure cane sugar. Great with a scoop of vanilla!

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!

Does that make you a Lefty?

Fun to read, guys! I'm a bit younger (31) and not familiar with a few of those places.

Lake Street and Porkies, A little before my time. Heard a lot about it though. Cruised the lake with my old Mustang, The Calhoun beach was a favorite hang out.

Porkies turned into Nora's, Now its something else.

Come on, everyone knows the 5-8 club by Lake Nokomis is home of the Jucy Lucy.

Mostly a St. Paul kid. I do remember when the bus along Randolph Ave. was only a dime. My aunt, Rosie, took me on my first city bus ride. When I was 16 I saw my first show at First Ave; Rage Against the Machine. Every year my dad would take us to the Farmington Motorcycle Swap Meet, one year I crashed my Vespa 200 in a field. Never told the old man. Grew up in Highland Park 'til I was 12, then moved in with my dad in Frogtown. Still live in the ghetto, although it's a little better now than it was then... lived right behind The Belmont Club (strippers) which was across the street from Faust Theater (XXX) and The Flick (porn shop).

Lots of places claim to be the home of the Juicy Lucy. Sounds like a job to send James Lileks on.

Right next to Fat Lorenzo's.

In the winter head up to the SW corner/bay of Nokomis for the speed skating oval. On real ice! My Dad used to skate there. I still have his skates and the toe bells too.

I did a tree job for Babs just after her being Mayor of Minneapolis. She was nice to work for. Up in Kenwood.

Ahhh...just thought of a tie from the present to the past.

If you go to the Sprawl of America, find the brass plate on the floor of the amusment park that is directly below home plate in Met Stadium, the Beatles played there. Look out...over there...where the upper deck of the RF bleachers would be...yeah...there on the wall. Above the flume ride you'll see an old bleacher seat. That is the seat in the EXACT location where Harmon Killebrew hit is longest homerun in Met Stadium. The design of the building was changed to accomodate the location.

At one time the seat where JFK sat when he visited Minneapolis and went to Sunday mass at St. Joseph's downtown was ribboned off too. We would go there for holiday high mass. Quite the ceremony!

They're located on the chest, in front, between the arms.

But no, I'm a rightie. I reached from behind...thru gloves, parka, sweaters and her long underware. I can't say I really felt it for sure, but there was something there, somewhere. I just know there was, or some day would be.

Home plate inside the Mall, really? I'll plan to go there then, look for it. Thanks. The Beatles stayed at the Thunderbird, rumors still shock some of the older Swedes, all that long hair and such (1964, right?).

The 5-8, another fine dining experience.

I love bar-burgers.

Think Babs was after my time - is she related to Curt?

[/ QUOTE ]

Nope..was married to Arne Carlson, governor. Mother of Tucker Carlson, with the bowtie...

When I told my Dad that I voted for a Republican gov he frowned hard. Arne did a good job as governor. I never had a complaint.

Oh, okay. I'd been long gone by then.

So those are Tucker's folks. Hmm. Seems like Al Franken's doing pretty good against Norm, also two 'unknowns' during my time but later on the t.v.

There was a sporting goods/camping gear store on Highway 100 south of Highway 12, west side. Can't remember the name of it, do you guys?

And like most kids back then, when White Castle was more evident than McDonald's, did you ever contest each other on how many .19 cent burgers you could eat? Record's 39 from my bud's, I hurled at 29.

Hoigaards, still there.

How 'bout Lilac drive(highway 100)?
Drove by the other day and watched a house moving company moving one of the old block bbq's. FYI, its now a 6 lane.

The number of freeways I saw blew me away.

I bet all the needed construction for all the new and existing roads will slow down for a bit now. Taking a breather, rest some. Re-think 'em a little. Sad to know how much asphalt's been added to my recollections but warms me to know Hoigaards is still there. That's where I bought my first pup tent that I took my first date camping to Taylor's Falls where I became a man, in the Darwin sense.

Those stone picnic areas were built by the CCC's in the thirties.

My folks used to joke about fat women getting their dresses made at Hoigaard's Tent and Awning.

Somewhere in my map file I've got a Hennipin County roadmap from the forties. Beltline/Lilac Drive/Highway 100 ringed the Cities.

When we had MN geography in grade school I can remember that the TCs were around the 15th largest metro in the US. Over the decades that seems to have stayed pretty standard. When 35W was built through Bloomington/Richfield they cut the basin of Wood Lake causing the water level to drop. It had been a lake big and deep enough to water ski on. After the water level dropped it started a rapid eutrophication and filling with cattails. Now it's a wonderful nature center.

Always underpromoted and less the tourist destination that New England's been for Fall foliage tours, I always thought the hardwoods of MN/WSC were spectacular this time of year. And this year with conditions back east, it'll win hands down. Wish I could be there for it. How's the apple crop doing?

Just got back from a weekend in the Lutsen/Tofte/Sawtooth area, the fall colors were unbelievable. The gondola ride at Lutsen was a blast.

Oh man, here I look around and see dust, brown, dust, dying oaks, more dust, buzzards flying around looking for dead stuff, some yellowing in the walnuts and cherry trees but that's 'cause they're dying from too much drying and...dust.

Sky's real blue though.

Wish I was and saw where you were around now.
