Minimal climbing gear

I've been climbing in Texas of all places practically all my life and never have even seen a water bladder.Trust me we have had 90 consecutive days of one hundred degree temps some summers and usually drink when we get down from a tree.Maybe I'll try one if you guys think its that necessary.My dad was kinda crazy and he always told us to man up. Maybe he was wrong. The older I get, either I become softer or smarter.

I may be speaking for Tom here, but I interpreted his post to be one of necessity for his current job- managing storm clean-up crews. These climbers show up from all over the country during storm work and some have very little gear or worn out gear or both. Am I wrong here Tom?
