A Collinsville man was airlifted Tuesday morning to the University Medical Center in Jackson after he was seriously injured while cutting a tree near a Philadelphia church.

Manuel Costilla with Charles Tree Service in Collinsville was cutting trees at the First United Methodist Church on east Main Street when he was struck across the face as one fell from the stump, a carpenter working alongside him said.

Costilla was sawing at the base of the tree, which was tied at the top by a cable when the incident occurred.

"If he had stepped left instead of right, he would have been out of the way," said Ernie Wilkerson, a carpenter with W. G. Yates and Sons Construction Co. "He was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time."

Costilla was coherent after the accident, said Wilkerson, an eyewitness to the accident. "He wanted to call his wife."

The FUMC office staff was not aware someone was hurt until hearing sirens from the ambulance that was to transport Castillo to Neshoba County General Hospital, the Rev. Fred Britton, pastor, said.

We are praying for him and his family, Britton said.
