Major Decision

Check with a company called IMT Transport out of Garner IA they are super familiar with transporting that sort of trucks. I think it's Jonny or Donny that is the dispatcher also my FILs cousin they are always looking for loads like that. They are good people quite fair on rates.

I wish I could find someone up there to give it a once over. I still have to talk to westminster tomorrow to make sure he thinks the truck is good. I dread the travel to go get it and bring it back to MD Who in their rite mind wants to drive through Chicago?
Wish I could refer someone for you Steve, but my mechanic (for the stuff I don't do myself) and best friend past away last year. He hit a dear on his bike. I know one other guy who might be interested in checking it out for you. I'll give him a call later today.

Chicago isn't bad at all to drive through now if you hit it at the right time. Get an Ipass before you go. You won't have to stop at the tolls and they are half the price if electronically taken vs stopping at the cash box.

My condolences on the loss of your friend. May he rest in peace.

So I've actually decided to walk on the Sterling truck. Kind of disappointing as it is really clean. SO at the advice of Westminster I called around to a few freightliner dealerships. Freightliner bought Sterling and discontinued the truck line. Some parts are available but very expensive. The consensus from the dealerships is that in a few years many of the parts will have to come from salvage or have to be made for the truck. It seems the savings up front will kill me in repairs as the parts become more and more scarce. I'm looking at a KW from Caledonia Diesel. 2003 with 453k miles on it. Seems on the higher side of the mileage though. I Need 20k front 46k rear and a 277" wheelbase with a doubled frame construction. Truck looks pretty clean and has a drop axle but still the mileage concerns me.

I'm in no crazy rush. It has taken the financing so long the boom they had for me has been sold. Another boom was ordered today when I sent the signed contract. Unfortunately I think its being carried by mule and sea turtle from Austria because it may not get to Westminster until November. Then the 60 day build process. January is the month. Smack in the middle of slow season! If I can get the cab and chassis to them way in advance they can do a lot of the pre build on the truck before the boom gets there and maybe speed the process along. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. I have a ton of leg work to do before. I've been working on accounting stuff, dot stuff, insurance, marketing blah blah blah. Hopefully the extra time will allow me to get my ducks in a row and hit the ground running with a head start. Thanks for the offer everyone. I will take somebody up on it but I have to have a good ID on the rite truck for the job.

I suggest you start keeping an eye on upcoming auctions. I have found that used trucks at dealers is often times the exact same trucks from the auction, sometimes with some new paint.

I think garbage trucks and roll off trucks fit the right specs.

So what parts on the sterling are hard to get? Other than a few things the majority of stuff on that truck is pretty universal. Engine, Trans, axle, and brake parts are and will always be easy to obtain. Body parts like hoods, grills, headlight bezels, ect might get harder to find but your routine maintenance and repair items shouldn't be a problem obtaining for around the same price as any other truck.

Evidently some of the parts have been renumbered as freightliner and the price jacked up a little. Others no longer in production. He couldn't specifically tell me without the last 5 of the vin
