Magnum = Dumbass!

Did you know that Stihl added the name Magnum to their pro saws cause they thought the american market would associate the name Magnum with Clint Eastwood and the cool image of guns in the US - dumb or what?

In Europe these saws were never given dumbass names!

In america the MAgnum used to refer to the fact that they came with the dual port front muffler cover......like the 046 and 046 MAGNUM.

Thats what you've been suckered in to believing BostonBull!

Stihl had to give these saws a macho name for the american market, unbeknown to them, instead of thinking of Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry, most people who saw the name thought of Tom Selleck and immediatly went off the idea of buying the saws!

Meanwhile fans of Magnum PI and Tom Sellick thought the saws were a godsend cause they could associate their work with the work of the great man himself - Tom Sellick, who was S**T in 'Friends' as monicas moustachoide boyfriend!!!

Stihl thanked their lucky stars that Magnum PI was a success in the eighties and that there was enough dumbasses to fall for the Magnum name to continue selling the saws!

Which in the end is why Husqvarna outsell Stihl in the pro market in the U.S. apart from the not stupidly named MS200, the best saw ever invented!

Its true, its all true!

Yeah, but ours is bigger than theirs. But anyway; i kinda preach comparisons to gun/ saw safety; so i guess that idea isn't too foreign to me! Kinda reminds me of JP's shirts with gunslinger with saws on hips; some of the handles of guys on boreds too. With a 16" bar i (great balance, power and speed) i've called mine a snub nose. Good thing they never tried that salesmanship tactic on vehichles!

A rose is a rose by any other name; but probably not a good name fer a saw! Sorry, couldn't help but have fun and keep it light!

Note that their version can only run a 25" bar maximum while ours can pull a 32"! Sounds magnum-like to me, hahaha!

Fooled again glens, by the wily people at Stihl.

They know the U.S. is about excess, thats why they've given us the option of buying a 32 inch bar.

A - We need to buy more chain from them!

B - The bigger bar is costs more

C - They need to try and recoup some cash from the Magnum/Tom Sellick marketing disaster.

and D - With the bigger bar your gonna go for bigger wood and wear the saw out quicker, so then you have to buy another Stihl.

Husqvarna is the way to go or jonsered if your poor.

Sadly mr treespyder ....you just proved my point.....

U.S.A. - chainsaw name = Magnum(guns) = Dumbass = Stihl makes money(but not as much as Husqvarna)

Europe and the rest of the world - chainsaw name = Heavy duty professional chainsaw = Not dumbass = Stihl makes money(more than husqvarna)

anyway....I reckon as the U.S. tree industry becomes more intelligent Stihl will phase out the name Magnum. Notice that they never gave the MS200T a dumbass name - cause they know arborists are becoming more informed and less jackass like!
Don't believe me?
Who would have thought that tough U.S. treeclimbers would buy a French Tree Climbing Harness called.........

THE BUTTERFLY!!!!!!

HA HA HO DE HO!!!!!

The Magnum name here in Canada meant on the 066 was you got a saw with a different muffler cover with dual ports, a different carb that had a governor in it , a different air cleaner and filter . the saw had the same motor but if you ran the 066 and the 066mag. side by side it was night and day , the mag. has alot more power and if you look at the horsepower reading between the 2 saws you would see that .

Without the dual port muffler neither of the magnums are much on power

You are missing the point....WHY DID STIHL CHOOSE THE NAME 'MAGNUM'

Because there is a very famous powerful gun with the same name!!!

Because the name Magnum in the earlier saws meant a bigger motor , you could say the same thing with Husky and their XP, its to mean extra power but I call it extra price cause on alot of the saws its the same crankcase with the jug ported higher . They had to cast the jug anyways so this higher porting never cost them a cent but its going to cost you lots

Bear in mind that in a few cases,038 and 038 Mag,and 056 and 056 Mag,the mag was a different larger sized bore.

The 038 Mag,perhaps ranks as a classic in more modern saws.It is often times prefered by some over it's replacement, the 044/ms 440.

Hey AxeKnot...

I've got your Magnum right here!

I agree with MB, who would spend so much of their time over something they admit is pointless?
