lurking women, care to introduce yourselves?

Boy, this place is really filling in. I met Tchukki at Expo and worked with her afterward, and met Ann in MO where I saw the great work she does writing about planting trees, and showing the world that women can climb and climb well.

Climb high, women! And pull in more to this safe place.

hi out there,

i'm new to posting but not reading, so i guess lurking fits the bill....i'm meghan from portland, oregon. i climb for a good sized company here in town and have been an arborist for about two years. Kathy, i introduced myself to you at the Corvallis comp. i've been climbing for over a year...still feel like a beginner though.

portland's climbing comp is June 21 and i'm in it. last year it was me and 27 or so guys. probably the same this year. but, with those newbie jitters sort of gone i think i'll really have more fun. i'm stuck on footlocking though. i feel like i'm using too much upper body strength and not enough lower body...any suggestions??? i can get a good lock but when i stand up i think i lose the power and then just have to haul myself up with my arms. not graceful....or smooth.

here's a female specific question: where do you women out in the field go pee? i feel so exposed going in the back of the truck like the guys and have used tarps and buckets to hide...i've managed thus far but just curious how others might have solved this problem.
cheers,
meghan

Welcome Mooretrees to the buzz

It's great that you have the ability to control 27 men - Better that you did a comp, my first was with a SEASONed group of men and MY HERO.

about the question, when on the road or trails, i use camo to assist in the act, a spray skirt or a bike in front of me, maybe I am not the best to answer that question for as far as I can remember, I've never been in a chip truck.

again - welcome

jz - getting her arm twisted.

hey meghan,
nice to see you here! i love that all of you women who read but don't post are coming out of the woodwork as a result of this forum. thanks again mark!

meghan, unfortunately i won't be able to make the p-land comp. i'll be in IL for my dad's 75th bday. dang. you go girl, give 'em hell. if you're up for a road trip i might be going to the vancouver comp (see thread below).

oh, and as for using the facilities - there are "boy spots" in most yards and "girl spots" in some. look for dense shrubbery :). or go to starbucks.

climb on girl!
k.

Welcome, Meghan! On the "place to pee" issue...isn't that a royal PITA! Guys really don't appreciate how easy they have some things. I have a serious problem with disrobing in public to relieve myself. Call me shy. But it just isn't an easy task (especially in winter where you are wearing every piece of clothing known to man...er, woman).

We hit the gas station between jobs. If I know it is going to be a long job I monitor my liquid intake (unless the heat is such that evapotranspiration takes care of that). A lot of our clients are nice enough to let us know a bathroom is available but if they don't offer I will ask but hate to do so.

Again, welcome...look forward to chatting with you on the Buzz.

Sylvia

Yeah, that's a toughie, isn't it? I've been in upscale neighborhoods with every inch of foliage groomed out of the shrubbery which allows for everyone to see what you're doing. Not good for sales, I'll tell ya that! But when I was the climber at the University of Central Florida I would threaten to go "right in the tree, right in my harness" if the foreman had a problem with me finding a suitable location for a p-break. I'm sure the groundies would have appreciated that view the rest of the day.

Hi my name is Tina, I live in Delaware. I do sales, spraying and work on crews for the company I work for. I got into tree work cause I was moving from PA to DE and just needed a job, turns out that I cant imagine doing anything else. I used to do some climbing but had surgery on my shoulder twice so now just bucket work and supervise. I am 36 years old and been doing tree work for the last 5 years and still loving it. If I had to pick I would only work on the crews its great seeing the customers excitement while or when we are done their work. HELLO ALL

Hi JZ

Now that's a good question. I think if you don't mind I would like to start that thread, since I often get asked by women who want in the industry, what the best way to get in the door is.
Stay tuned for a new thread!

Ladies: Keep on sharing your stories!!! This actually totally helps others who really want in our world, but need a little inspiration from those who live it. Plus those that are in it, love to hear from their peers.

Hey Western Chapter Ladies, I know you are out there, so chime in!!!

Aah the 'pee' thing...
Luckily it seems we have a bigger 'reservoir' than the men.
Over here I can usually duck into a gas station, or when working in the nature reserves there is plenty of shelter...
Quite a few clients will actually show sympathy and tell me to go ahead and come inside if I need to!
Its all about dignity...do what you need to to maintain it!

Hi All,
This was a great idea, I have enjoyed reading all of your entries and wow there are some amazing wemon in this industry. I admit I am usually a lurker, but look I am posting something!
A little about me. I have been doing one thing or another on a tree crew for 5 years now. I started out raking and dragging brush on the weekends helping out friends (all guys) on side jobs. That was when I realized how great it is to work with trees. We all eventually quit our jobs and started a company. We learned a lot over the next few years and eventually closed the buisness to go on to better jobs in bigger companies. I learned to operate all of the equipment and did some climbing. In 2006 I got my Certified Arborist credential. I hope to compete in the Florida climbing compitition next year for the first time. Wish me luck. See you all in Sarasota!!!!
As for the P thing, I always found a gas station, bush or chip truck (in that order) sometimes the client would be home and offer the facilities. I usually just tried not to drink more than I sweated out. In Florida that's pretty easy because it is so HOT down here. If you just absolutely have to leave, take the truck and go. The boss has to provide you with acess to clean facilities within a reasonable ammount of time, per OSHA. :)

Hello Heartwood - did we meet at the florida comp - i was the gal in the white petzl helmet - WAIT there were only three women there in the ring or in a tree that has helemts AND I am sure you would ahve HEARD ME - i have such a SOFT voice

Were you the person speaking with Scottyfl about visiting and training - IF so then ya we meet.

Great to have you here - is there a chance you can make the "OUTCCTT" EVENT that is getting setup.

I am putting that on my calendar - I need to be there to watch the boys and try to encourag them to quit smoken

jz - waiting for the rain

Hi,
Yes that was me. Love to go to the event. When and where? I have been learning all about the events from a few climber friends of mine, and the rule book. I have been playing around on the weekends. That Secured Footlock is tough. I am too slow right now but practice makes perfect. Looking forward to seeing you there.
Aloha, Annie

Hi,
I'm Lori. I've been a long time lurker. I co-own Strictly Trees, a small tree company in Santa Rosa, CA. I do a bit of climbing and would love to see more women involved in the competitions.
