Looking for advice on a bucket truck.

I'm looking to build a new shop now. We have an accepted offer on our place and are looking for a new place that we can build on and run the business out of. My parents had a nice pole barn where I worked on my stuff but they sold their place last year and moved to Arizona. Currently I'm bouncing around working on my stuff either in my driveway or at friends farms. So I guess it's a lil combination of both.

I'm doing the same thing right now. Zoning is the dealbreaker. Before you build just dot your I's and cross your T's on the zoning. Which mostly involves checking with the neighbors.

Yeah, but make sure you can do what you want in that zoning. I rent land and talked with the neighbor of where we are keeping our equipment before we ever parked anything there. She was fine with it. Everything was going great. Then one day she stops by and asks if we can not start the truck before 8am and then not run anything from 2-3:30. Nothing on the weekends or on Holidays. I told her no, that was not going to work. She went crazy. Luckily I am in a commercial area so I do not have to abide by her rules. Just means she is always pissed at us. I get where she is coming from, but she lives in a major commercial area.

How close is her house from your trucks and were you processing wood there?

Yeah I've done my research on the zoning laws and ordinances here. I'm assuming I'll probably end up with something agriculture zoned as I would like to do a small scale tree farm as well. I can run the tree service out of ag zoned land with a conditional use permit. The only downfall is I wouldn't be able to retail firewood from my location it would be by delivery only. I'm only looking at adding firewood as a means of keeping my guys busy between jobs and slow times in the winter.
I have my eye on my dream piece of property and I'm ready to pull the trigger on it but my wife isn't ready to go that far into debt. We are actively looking, we'll see what happens in the near future.

This bucket truck has the 466 in it which brings a smile to my face. I will post pics if I get ... I mean, WHEN I GET IT. Keep the vehicle posts coming in and don't forget the pics!

I've mentioned this before, but our 05 DT 466 has a major overheating problem. Seems to be mostly sawdust in the radiator, but it's a constant issue in the summer. Can't go 10 miles on the highway empty w/no trailer without hitting 230*.

Looking into a replacement radiator with bigger fins.

Look into a fine mesh screen you can snap onto the grill. I can't believe how much gets stopped by the screen on the chipper.

Her house is through the woods about 500 feet way. So she's not super close, but close enough. We do not do any processing. However, we do unload and log the log truck and that can be noisy at times.

Oh and it's likely plugging up the intercooler before the radiator too, so larger fins on the radiator probably won't help ya much.

Yeah, could be. We've had the snap on screen for years, it's just the fine powdery stuff that gets through. Was advised to get a hot pressure wash for the radiator, which is a good idea, but still a temp fix. That damn fan just won't kick on.

I only mention it because I know I'm not the only one having this issue.

Electric clutch or heat clutch on the fan?
Heat clutch. Been replaced once with absolutely no difference. I've thought how nice it would be to have an electric fan. I have 5 unused switches under the radio. Wiring one of those would be great, but I don't know what all is involved with that or if even possible.

If the Rad is plugged then the heat from the Rad isn't making its way to the heat clutch, it's designed to have enough air flowing through the Rad to expand the clutch, get the Rad cleaned out and the clutch will start working again.

After you have it washed the best thing to do is take a blow gun from a good air compressor and blow from the engine side of the Rad through it to blow all the crap out, do this once a week or daily if necessary and that will permanently solve your problem.

Those radiator screens work well. Don't forget that diesels like heat. The preferred temp is 210 deg so 230 isn't terrible but warmer than needed.

I to have parking my equipment issues as well as no shop. I have drawn up on paper what I'd like to build several times. I now have two versions. I'm probably going the 40'w x 50'l version. One 14'h overhead door on the gable with an entry door. Got to get property first. Preferably ag.

I'm planning on way more than one overhead door. I'll likely build a 40x80 or 100. One door on each gable end in the back corners. This way I'll be able to pull in and drive through with the convoy so no backing trailers in. I'll likely have three overhead doors on the front side. One bay will be walled off and insulated with in floor hydronic heat. I'll have my tools and a big hoist in there. There will also be a small office / saw room. Desk, saw racks, sharpening stations ect... I'll get there someday!

Beautiful to dream and make a goal out of it, and then try to make it a reality. My dad always said you can have what ever you want if ya work for it. Off to work I go....

I like that! Thats not that far off. Just keep working towards a goal and you can get it. It's amazing where this industry will take you if your work hard!!

So true! It'll take you even farther if you work smart, which seems like you're doing. Anyway here's a rough sketch of what I'm planning on building in the near future. It won't be long!

It's not big enough! lol. You forgot the space around the bays that you will need for .... Welder, torches, toolbox, tire machine, work bench, blast cabinet, parts washer, air compressor, .... I know I'm forgetting something lol. Although I don't have an office, I drew up a two car deep and a healthy two and a half wide. With the overhead on the gable end I can access both bays. The left 2nd deep bay is reserved for a rotisserie. I will always have a project to play around with.

I don't care how big you go it'll never be big enough. Most of the stuff you listed would go on the not heated side of the wall that divides the shop. Except the compressor goes outside, in its own little room.
