LombardyPoplar-Crane-Removal

Here’s a Lombardy Poplar we took down earlier this week. The lower half was full of dead ivy of which I had to cut my way through to get to the TIP. Many climbers might have opted to hitch a lift with the crane, but an access route needed cutting out sooner or later so I got that messy job out of the way first thing. Other than that, pretty straight forward, 50t crane, nice day for it etc.

You’ll have to pardon me for not participating further in this thread, only I’m going to be busy for a few days. Thanks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iwY-lrSmWU

Thank you for your continued video coverage of the tree work you do Reg. That was a huge Lombardi Poplar! I hate Ivy! I'be you saw Ivy in your dreams for a while after that...

Ditto, never seen a LP that big. Nice to make all those big, viney cuts go bye bye using the big iron!

Another good video. Another good reason to cut your way up is to be able to inspect the trunk under the vines. No hidden decay spots...especially with poplars

Nice work as usual, Reg. Practically all vertical picks. Which makes the job go easier. Looks like someone killed the ivy prior to the work, and that helps. The tree was topped once for sure, but maybe twice. It's hard to tell, but part of the reason for making it so big around.

Good job mate!
Big old lombardy too!
Cleaning the vines on the way up makes it a lot easier spiking back down on the trunk later on in the job. Also the groundies can clean up the cut vine in quiet times through out the job.

What was left of the three, which were mere feet apart, 148 footers, 7, 6, and 5 feet at ground level :

Rog, I was beginning to worry, where ya been?

I just looked through your album again (lombardy's), BIG job, and some of the best photo's on the forum.

Had ours not been topped in the past, it might have developed into similar stature by the time we removed it, quite a grand tree perhaps. I think it had been topped only once before, but unfortunately by way of someone’s misguided recommendation/remedy on this particular species is what ultimately led to its premature removal, perhaps as little as 12 years after the event.

Personally I find lombardy's pretty easy to work with, unless its windy.

Thanks for all the comments.
