loading some logs

A for effort and ingenuity; but i don't think a man should be behind the load on that rig.

On slick enough ramp with sides or trapped sled; could drag up ramp i think. Might try boom or crossbar lift with wench at end or over side.

Might also try to parbuckle the wench pull around the log; that will take longer; but can move more up ramp and/or lift without ramp. Would need to hook double leg to end of truck; just long enough for lift or ramp; then to single cable pull. The wench would need to be 2x as far away as the lift or ramp.

I have thought of doing the same thing. As for being behind the load. I don't think there is much concern. Log dollies are great. You basically need to find a balance spot. And since the winch is pulling, the person only needs to balance the load.

Thanks Buzzers, for your comments.

Treespyder, I appreciate what you say about `the man behind the load`. It is, however, not too dissimilar a scenario from a climber on the end of a rope at height. Providing the winch cable is strong enough, the attachment to the truck is secure and you don`t steer it off the ramps it seems safe to me.

Treebing, a friend of mine wanted those pine logs to that length. If you want any more you`d be most welcome, but I couldn`t deliver them for you !

Jamin Mayer, you say you thought of doing it yourself - do it! It will be worth your while, I promise. Some posters on MasterBlaster`s site say it looks too slow and that they`d just throw them on by hand. Cutting them into 2/3 pieces takes longer, once you`ve factored in clearing up the sawdust and touching up your chain if there`s any nails about. Skidsteers and cranes are quicker, but they have their own disadvantages like cost, storage, fuel, insurance, transport and maintenance.

MasterBlaster, I couldn`t really claim to have `invented` anything, but thanks for your interest. BTW,you have a terrific website.

Tockmal, the winch is a Superwinch 3000. Thanks for posting the link to the Chemical`s video. Genius ! I tell you one thing, they didn`t make that on windows movie maker.

I think its a very good and a cheap alternative to a crane-truck, although I don't think those particular sections really do it justice!

Depending on the winch and ramp capacity, there's nothing to stop you discarding the log-dolly and pulling some pretty substantial pieces straight up the ramps, should the opportunity present itself.

Good idea Nick, commendable of you to share it.

Nice thinking Nailer - brains vs braun. Will be really useful on the heavy stuff. You could make a couple of bogies to strap to each end of longer logs. My neighbour has a couple - he's all seriously geared up for utility pole refurb. Nice kit that comes in handy for my jobs now and again.

With bogies, you could even run the cable down through a passage to the rear garden, re-directed round standing logs (or something more clever) on the passageway corners?

Cheers

Don't they come out of your nose???

Your old school for sure Laz2!!

My grandpappy used to talk about 'a bogie/bogies' for shifting stuff round his garden!!

That is a great idea. I used that with my dump trailer last year working on my own. I used a log dolly, warren winch, and a 4x6 sheet of plywood on my loading ramps. I would tie the wood to the dolly and pull it up backwards standing to the side to help guide it. I anchored the plywood using cables that hook to the trailer, a must. Now I use my bobcat M52. Much easier expecially since I can leave them at 12 feet or 500 lbs.

A suggestion would be to put some 3M non-skid tape on the ramp where you walk.
