Lite-com

Anyone else using the Peltor Lite-com system? I highly recommend them, especially for use with cranes. It helps out tremendously with communication, we'll use three (sometimes four), one in the tree, one with the crane operator, and one with a ground person-to ask for appropriate straps, saws, etc., or to make a judgement call from a different perspective on balance. With the noise of a crane, chipper, skidsteer and saws, hand signals can only say so much. I only wish I'd bought the Power-com, though it's really steep (about 600 compared to 400). The biggest complaint I have is that with only five channels on the lite-com, you'll often get interference from nearby baby monitors, sometimes other things, and it is occasionally hard to find a clear channel. And they'll get hot in the summer.
One of the best things is that you can get someone's attention if need be, while their back is turned or they're focusing elsewhere using a chipper or chainsaw, and say, like, "whoa, there's someone walking underneath," (because for some reason people can't grasp the meaning of the huge yellow flagging that says WARNING all over it). Or "Do you realize your notch is aiming at the corner of the house?" For that reason alone they are worth the money.

I AGREE THAT THOSE HARD HAT RADIOS ARE PRETTY COOL, i've used them before and they were handy, although the guy on the ground had his turned up and the client standing nearby could hear every lick of my profanity and insults directed at the company owner about starting an all day removal after lunch..and what i thought of him for underbidding it. a lil lack of proffesionalism on my part, but hey a heat cat rating of 120 degrees and telling us we we working till dark (8 or 9 pm ) had me irked.. they were nice to tell the operator to lift a lil bit, or ask if it looked like it was going to be but heavy enough to not rotate.. curently i yell over the chipper and use handsignals for the crew.. although i have been told i can be heard about half a block away...

do you need to press a button or are those voice activated. i looked into trying "Chatter box" which are used for motorcycles but havent yet. if they are voice activated how are they w/ saws running?

They can operate either voice-activated, or by a button on the bottom of the right side earpiece. The VOX works quite well, it has adjustable sensitivity settings. The mike needs to be pretty close to your mouth, and for vox you need to do a little "vox stutter" momentarily to get it on. It can be activated by a saw running very close to it, but rarely. It is more easily activated by heavy breathing with exertion or wind. They do sell a wind screen for them.
All of the settings are done through a voice menu, that is, you press a button on the side and a female voice says something like "volume, 4" or "vox, 2" and you can press one of two other buttons to go up or down. Pretty slick, really. She can speak French, as well, if you so desire, though the vocabulary is limited in either language.
