Line Clearance

But Mark... haven't you ever read the warning labels on stuff and wondered "Who would be THAT stupid"?

Obviously, they're out there!

LMAO Seriously, when I worked for Asplundh (many moons ago), my foreman used to talk of some days wanting to just reach out and touch the wire to see just what would happen.

It was always good for a laugh.

Why couldn't he? You can just grab the wire when working from a bucket. What other reason is ther for useing a bucket to trim trees around primaries besides that fact that most Asplundh employees can't climb. As long as your not dumb enough to be grounding yourself, even with the the smallest of leaves or twigs or what ever. Its still a bit scary to do so. Don't try this at home.

Hi,Im new to these forums.I work in utility arb in the UK & we never touch the conductors even when there is an outage.
I have had a few near misses with branches touching conductors but managed to sort them out & its not a nice thing haveing shocks off 11Kv or induced voltage off 275/400Kv.

Kev, sounds like you found one of the few uses for that junk. Once in a while I see it here as conductor but not to often. I think the linemen use it as ground wire.
It's the #4 and #6 ACSR that we have to watch out for. Especially if it's near a salted hwy. I must've seen a dozen lines so far this summer with damaged conductor. In one line section the #6 was held up with just the steel core. Lovely eh?

ACSR is easy to ID, it's the one with all the splices in it. /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I thought your crew might be into Northland last week, Tom had the power shut down while replacing some poles for me.
It would have been a good time to tackle those hazard trees.
I spent today in the tops along the highway taking some braches off our strand along 556.
Nice day!

Most of those people at that lake will be gone for the season soon. Our crew has the equipment and privelge to isolate and de-energize lines so doing the job is just a matter of time. We're so shorthanded right now it isn't even funny. Seems all we have been doing lately are hazard trees and outages. Worked on section of line dead yesterday and for good reason...out of 7 spans there were 5 bad spots in the #4ACSR. I stopped trying to count the splices, I didn't have that much time. Someday we'll get to Northland..... someday.

Just one more pole and one more span to replace and I'm outa there! /forum/images/graemlins/applaudit.gif

The demand has dropped off and I'm getting lots of time to play in the trees, the weather has been great for climbing.

I start holidays at the end of October so if I don't see you on the road soon I'll see you
sometime next year. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mark, I told you about your twin I saw a few years ago at the Charlotte Airport, right? I should've taken a picture, but alas, it was pre-smartphone era for me.
