This tree was struck by lightning 3 years prior to making this video.
In the first year, the canopy looked fine... in the second year, the big lead in this video looked almost completely dead. It only had a few little green side limbs on the entire lead. I had the bucket truck back there and was about to take the entire lead off, and then it started raining, so I postponed. Then the third year, the lead that I thought was mostly dead and surely going to die completely made a stunning recovery. All the dead tips remained dead, but it started pushing out a lot of new growth along the big wood of the lead. My buddy said that cambistat can make a tree that looked like it was dying do something similar.
The lesson I took away from this experience is to give the tree time to "make up it's mind"... before cutting anything live off.
I'll continue to keep an eye on it as its in my yard. I really need the shade for the lower deck.
