Older style. Standard/non self-tailing. Obviously used and has had some repairs done at some point in its life. Condition is as expected for a sailing winch made sometime between 1982 and 1992.

I bought a pair of these. Tore them both down, cleaned, replaced missing parts (which were hard to find and not cheap), then lubed, and reassembled. Although not blue water ready, it’s ready for years of service on the splice bench. I was originally planning to mount this winch on the tongue of a trailer for dragging stuff onboard and splicing in the field but decided it may be better used on someone’s splice bench.

Winch is functional and all parts are present except the chrome top cover. The cover was missing when I received it but I found a bushing from McMaster that fits/works well. I also sanded the corroded gear seats then added a steel bushing/shim for the gears to rest on.

To mount, you just need to remove the coil snap ring from the top, then lift off the drum to expose the mounting holes. Base is ~8.5” Diameter.

A winch handle is not included. They can be found online.

I am just looking to get what I have into it. $350 and you cover actual shipping. Pay once for winch, then make another payment once I ship and get cost. Shipping was $75 each when I purchased them. Cash, check, or PP (you pay the fees). Winch is currently in the Denver, CO area and am willing to meet a local buyer.

New, winches this size are in the $2-3K range. Similar used winches of unknown function tend to run in the $500-1K range.

A few comments on using it for splicing. It is sized well and I have had no issues doing the final buries on Tachyon, Blue Moon, Ocean Polyester, and many other double braids. It may be my favorite splicing tool. Drum is large enough to accommodate 7 wraps of ½” rope which has been more than sufficient to prevent slipping. I have mine mounted on the end of an 8’ bench with an anchor on the opposite end. Super easy for a single eye on the end of a long rope. For short lanyards or E2Es, I use a section of vintage sta-set to wrap around the drum and pull from the ends or the middle in a basket with a pulley (both eyes on anchor). It is easy to milk the cover with one hand while holding the slack in the other. I have also been able to slip the tail under the tensioned line or add a half hitch to hold the slack if I need to. So, to summarize, the lack of self-tailing has not been an issue.

The winch for sale is on the left. You can see the missing chrome cover and the smaller washer/shim I used as a replacement.
