Least expensive 4-wheel-drive lawn / garden tractor

Slight derail ..............

I was in Owen Sound in 2008 for the Ontario TCC. Were you there ?
What a great crowd of spectators ! ! !
It seemed like the entire crowd stayed thru the presentations !

now back to the thread.

I had a 4100 Deere and loved the tractor but for tree work comparing it to my mini, the mini wins hands down. And I only have a little Thomas 25gt. There are some very capable minis out there now. Feeding the chipper and the space required on the trailer is where the mini really shines. I could feed the chipper with the tractor, it just took a lot more room and usually an extra grab or two. The tractor takes up my whole dump trailer tho. With the mini I can load wood into the front and still leave room for the mini. Or the mini is small enough to ride on the front of my equipment trailer and have a lift on the back (Sd64).

No I just moved here a couple years ago. Glad you had a good time !

Greg, how much weight will that Deere 4400 loader pick up?
I am contemplating going to a tractor over a mini skid.
I wouldn’t contemplate a tractor over a mini skid. I would however contemplate a 40-50hp or larger tractor over getting a full sized skid steer.

I am not trying to sell tractors.
And I am not in the arbor / tree biz.
So I think the choice depends on which tasks, & how often it will be used for those tasks.

e.g. 100% residential tree work; some home / garden / farm use; snow blower attachment / etc.

If I were in the biz, I might seriously look at a skid-steer or 4 wheel loader (reduced turf damage ?)

I have a small local tree service that started using a skid-steer, long before anyone else.
When he trailered it, it would always be tarpped.
He didn't want the competition to know about his "secret weapon".

I used a tractor when I got into doing tree work on my own. I mainly used it because I already owned it. I have a yanmar ex3200. It beats loading wood into the truck by hand any day. It's not great for brush. I ended up buying an SK650. It's way faster to use especially dealing with brush. I'd definitely choose the mini between the two. The only time the tractor has gone on a job since buying the mini is if it's broken down.

A 30 HP compact utility tractor (CUT) should be able to handle a 1000# load on the front end loader (FEL). I could pick around 1700# with my Massey Ferguson 49 HP CUT, I upgraded to agricultural tractor, same HP and increased my lift capacity to 3500#.
