If you really want to learn the ropes consider this training:

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is seeking volunteers interested in the opportunity to become sail crew for our fleet of historic ships. We will offer "Introduction to Square Rigger Sailing" classes beginning in January 2006. Students will learn the basics of how to crew on a square rigged ship, with the 1863 barque, Star of India, as the classroom. Graduates of the classes are eligible for selection as sail crew for future sailings of the Star of India, Californian, and H.M.S. Surprise. Other volunteer crew opportunities include participating in the re-rigging the H.M.S. Surprise, the ship used in the filming of the movie Master and Commander.

Applicants must be over 18 years of age, be in good health, and provide proof of health insurance. There is no charge for the classes, but participants must be members of the Maritime Museum of San Diego (basic membership is $40.00 per year).

Just as a teaser...I'm thinking about trying to setup something similar for the USS Constellation in Baltimore to coincide with Expo next year. It would be a day-long gig. Is anyone interested? The picture is Mahk Adams on the fore lower topsail yard of the Constellation.

The idea that I have now would be to plan it for the day before Expo. It might cut into setting up for the show but that could be worked around. I'm not sure if Expo is W-F or Th-S. Either way, it seems like we would have more of the ship to ourselves during the week.

This is all just floating in my head right now. Kevin, who set things up last time, said that Bruce McKenzie would probably go for the idea. He's worked with many arbos before and has great experiences. Too bad we can't transfer those good experiences to the rec tree climbing world.
