Laser distance measurers anyone?

Anyone tried to use a laser distance measures (like the bosch glr500) to determine tree heights?

Looking for something that can give me a quick estimate from the ground up to maybe 275 ft or so.

Have you given consideration to iPhone and android app called Too Big Too Far? I have found it to be very accurate as long as I know the exact distance I am from the tree.

When it comes to phones, I am old school and don't have a smart phone. Too cheap to pay for a data plan.....

How does the app work? In concert with the camera?

Depends whether you want a distance measurement or a height measurement ...

Here's the high-tech version of the Stick Trick ...

Clinometer

Hard to believe that for ten bucks you get something that works, but it does.

Yes, by using the camera as a view finder. My understanding is the new phones have both GPS, electronic accelerometers and gyroscopes. In other words it knows the angles. So you measure how far you are from the tree or object, tilt the phone using the camera, set the cross hairs on the object you want to know the height of, it figures height knowing the distance and the angle. Pretty amazing stuff but basic math.

I also am too cheap (so far) to pay for a data plan myself, but you can always buy a used Itouch from ebay. No data plan, no phone either, but you can video chat with wifi, look at treebuzz, email, send videos/pics, and of course, use apps like the one mentioned.

Definitely changed my (online) life, have had it for two years now, thinking about getting the new one. Maybe I'll post my old one in treebay!

Alot of the better distance measurers have built in functionality to compute height.

That clinometer looked interesting enough I ordered one to fool with.

[/ QUOTE ] Me too, this way I can still measure stuff while I'm talking on the phone. Thanks for the link to interesting things.
