Landscapers and MULCH!!!!

WTF is up with the 16" half sphere mound of mulch that is put out by them at the base of trees? I try to talk to them and it is like pissing into a fan. When I explain to the customers why the trees are stressed because of it, I look like the ahole. There seems to be 48000 landscapers per town and only 2% may be educated. Is this a problem everywhere?

Disclaimer: I wanted to drop the gloves with one a hour ago.

What? Don't you know? It keeps the root flare warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

We don't have the volcanoing problem here but we have plenty of "reputable" landscapers that kill trees about a year after the warranty is up. Just came from a house where i basically told the homeowner she wasted $20k on dying trees, weeds and landscape fabric.

i never understand why landscapers don't make it a priority to make their installations last more than a few years.

I had a landscape guy tell me once that there is a 15 year service life of an install. Guess they don't go for long term solutions. Doesn't make financial sense for them to do that.

this is big time where i am from . i see so many trees sick or dying from this . when i explain and show this to the client . ( digging the mulch away from the tree and showing them the rotten bark ) they seem to understand . i tell them a thin layer of mulch . still looks nice and your tree will be able to live and get benefit from the mulch instead of it being piled against the tree and rotting and bringing infection to it . i always tell them the skin analogy if your skin was not kept clean and dry and always around moisture you would soon get fungal and bacterial infections . bark ( root flare ) needs to be kept clean and dry ,roots need oxygen , do not cover with landscape fabric . they usually understand when you put it in human terms . sucks that dumb landscapers do this . you would think they would know better ( common sense right ? ) not so common !!!!!!!!
