Landscape patio design

I would greatly appreciate any ideas anyone has on how I might beautify my awful yard. We bought this house about 3 months ago. The former owners did nothing to help the grass and with watering restrictions in the summer, it was left to dry out. I just want to improve the soil and beautify the yard with some native flowers. All I need to do is to beautify the yard with some native plants to create a beautiful landscape. How can we improve the quality of soil? I was planning to buy some landscaping equipments. I thought of planting some drought-tolerant plants that grow in quickly and uniformly that will that is native to Mississauga. I just want to create a landscape on my own. I thought of planting some I was thinking of having river stones up to the front 3 trees with a curved border. I was planning to purchase some river and patio stones and then put in some kind of patio in the front while putting in sod on what's left. The back of the house has a big patio, but still with the awful grass. Any ideas on designing a landscape and patio?

Mulch mulch mulch. It holds moisture and easily refreshed. Rock is terrible as stuff breaks down inbeds it creates soil for weeds to grow in. Tear out is expensive and wasteful. Itll also increase heat around plants. Water infiltration will be lower due to poly and plant change will be miserable. I left a job because of how much landscape rock we dealt with if that says anything.
