Knuckle Boom VS Stick Boom

oh, and then there is the other versatile things with the k-boom.

we have hydraulic power out to the end of the boom, that's what those reels are on the boom (they roll up the hoses).

Here’s our kinshoffer grapple on the end of the boom.

It’s has amazingly strong grip.

I actually don't use it much though.

Also, the negative, is the hoses on the side of the boom, you have to watch out that tree branches don't snag.
I'm going to set it up where the hoses detach from the end of the boom and go back to the first reel.

A fly jib (like allmark and mike poor) would keep more material out and away from the main boom. But I thought I'd be using the grapple more often and was told I couldn't have hydro power out the end of the fly-jib.

then there is this really nice Palfinger basket that slides right into the end of the boom.

It's like a 5 grand basket!

But, being a climber, I prefer to be tied into the boom and hang below it, and be able to move if I want.

here's picture of two of us in basket, going up to do a big cabling job.

then there is another item that i want to add sometime, to make this k-boom truck even more useful. but i won't let that one out until i have done it.

Wow. That's a great piece of equipment. I had no idea that they could be that versatile. You were right. That blows the doors off of the spider lift I suggested before. I didn't realize they could do all of those thing!!!

Great pics

Now, our k-boom height is probably 85ft vertical. i know, i know, i haven't actually measured yet. I know it's completely horizontal reach from the first knuckle, 69' 9". But we have to actually measure the vertical due to different trucks it could be mounted on. but it looks like 12 to 15 feet might be added from the ground to the first knuckle, so I've always said it's about 85'.

anyway, we have some fairly tall trees in this area.

i just wanted to mention, that the crane doesn't have to be taller than the tree to make a pick.

if i am near i tree, i can take some pretty good weight.

so, i max out the boom height, then drop it back down a foot or two, so i have room to lift. put the straps or slings on and just make sure it has more butt weight than tip weight, that's all.

here's a picture of a pick we did shortly after we got the truck. i was a little worried and put a block on the tree with a bull-line on the butt, just in case the butt wasn't heavy enough and to minimize any movement.

strap attachment point was like probably 83', as the truck was under the tree.

another of that same pick, this time, you can see the climber for perspective.

rope was taken out of the block here, because the pick didn't move anyway.

i shouldn't flood this thread with my pictures, so maybe i'll start another post, just showing a lot of our different work pictures with this k-boom. If anyone cares to see more.

till next time........

I have some decent videos to edit and post sometime, but we've been pretty busy this winter and I haven't had much time, like i thought i might.

Yeah man keep at it. This is the most interesting thread going. I just can't believe how versatile they are and the kind of weight they can handle. I don't know anyone around here running a kboom right now so I don't get to see any in action. I'm living my kboom fantasys vicariously through you treebuzzers.

Hey, I just found out a past employee of ours who lives in Danville got accepted at this big company he's contract climbed for a bunch. He said they have a big k-boom, 100ft reach i think he said, and he'll be the main climber on the crane crew. Once we get some of this work out of the way and we get some free weekends, he said come on down and we can watch and take pics.

oh, and newer k-booms can move past "straight". and can therefor go under objects easier.

i had forgotten i had drawn this simple diagram (mind as well post it):

This works well so you can pick trunk sections under the wires. There is no sense reaching over them if you dont have to. I have also reached under bigger tree canopies and I remember Mike reaching under a bridge before.

Allmark

what ton kboom do you have again?

[/ QUOTE ]
50t/m

[/ QUOTE ]

so you cant really compare apples to apples with charts then. I said they have weaker charts, you said you can pick more with your 50t than a 30t Altec @ 100'. I would hope so, you have 20t more capacity.

These are very versatile tools, I have never worked with one to see the true benefits, so for now my vote goes to AT cranes.

what about price comparisons? which is cheaper? I suspect kbooms over 40t?

hey, at the risk of sounding stupid. what does AT stand for? thanx.

All Terrain. It's a class of crane ie. rough terrain, boom truck, telescopic truck crane, tower crane, etc.
