Knuckle Boom VS Stick Boom

[ QUOTE ]
Just the opposite. My crane has more capacity at 100' than a 30 ton Altec.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes it does, but, theres on room for limb roll, weight has to be guessed at how far you are out, boom moves slower than a 2 speed winch.

Each has it's draw backs and each has it bonus. Biggest bonus I can see with the Kboom is feeding the chipper right from the pick with out even touching the limb/lead. You aint doing that with a stick.

great points also you cant cable down with kboom. it takes alot more movement with kboom to lower piece. You could cable down and set piece down in yard while over the house unlikely but you would be able to.where a kboom you would have problem with boom contacting roof.

just about every k-boom has an optional winch and cable package available. most people just choose not to get it, because the boom moves fast on most models.

to the orignal question.

here is some things that come to mind:

k-boom, generally the whole truck package is lower in height in the stored position and can get under low hanging trees and obstacles.

k-boom, the biggest positive in my opinion is that it folds up and the truck can be used to haul logs or other materials. to utilize this further, i have a hooklift system and I'm not stuck with one bed. I have chip boxes, log bed and flatbed... and more in the future.

More later, dinner is ready……….

i will continue my list later........

[/ QUOTE ] There is plenty of room for limb roll w/ a kboom. We just utilize longer straps. Weight has to be guessed(educated) with any crane when taking a piece. If you are talking about when the piece is hanging and a digital read out then that is also available on kbooms just like straight cranes. It just depends on what options you get with the crane.

Let's face it they're both GREAT! I grew up rigging out so many trees that should've been craned. When i did my first crane rmv (late teens) it was a slap in the face! More: Safe, efficient, productive, & easy! But for me It's Lg. KNUCKLEBOOMS (like no one saw that reply coming) I can't do without the versatilty & manoeverability of K'booms! Some of the major advantages: NO COUNTERWEIGHT (who wants to haul weights around- sometimes on a seperate truck), BOOM ANGLE ( you can lay a k'boom below horizontal & still make a huge pick) MANUEVERING around, over, or under obstacles(I've made so many picks that a stick boom COULDN"T make do to obstacles) You don't need a winch unless you're picking out of a canyon (and you get more free swing w/ a winch) If you need downward reach just hang a hook off a long sling. I've set logs down behind 3 story houses. The OUTRIGGERS on a K'BOOM are so variable you can set-up in variety of tight or open spots and when they're set wide they have very low ground pressure (I'll try to find photos from some of last weeks jobs) O/R's spanning over ditches, on thin concrete porches, in between houses, etc. My old EFFER 550 hasn't worn or needed any of the moving parts replaced (just a few hoses, o-rings, & elec. parts) My old HIAB 300 was a MAINTENANCE NIGHTMARE!

I like k-booms a lot. But actually I wondered if Mike's new big one made sense.

Well, I thought it made sense to him because he is so used to k-booms. But to be honest, I thought, well, if you can't use the rest of the truck, why not get a stick crane? (big K-booms are very expensive)

I've thought, if a person in the tree business really wanted to get a crane, just for the purpose of being a crane, it should be something like a Grove 3055. Tremendous height on stick, plenty of lift capacity for tree work, can turn on a dime, won't get stuck, wide tires displace weight pretty good. Excellent cab that tilts and a 1000 other neat things.

grove 3055

But again, I haven't used a big k-boom like Mikes new one, and there are probably lots of positives that I don't know about.

I'm glad he mentioned the counter weights often needed on large stick booms. That's a good point.

but here's why I have a k-boom:

so i can use the whole truck, for more than just a crane.

equipment hauler (on the bed)

log truck

huge chip truck

log truck.

bed can be put on the ground, where skid loader is much faster at loading than the boom.

yes, logs should NOT be loaded this high, i know. it was a short distance to go.

that hooklift system, is rated at pulling on or dumping 40,000lbs. I can carry legally, 30,000 lbs on the bed, to limit me at 70,000lb gvw.

another picture of that log load on the truck. too high, i know.

we will make a better log bed in the future, this one is temporary.

huge chip box. usually can chip all day without filling it.

plus, I can pull the chipper.

unhook the chipper, put the box on the ground in front of the chipper and strap the chipper tongue to it.

then place the truck where needed, to use the k-boom for the tree work.

job finished, pull the chip box back on, hook up to chipper and go home.

I hope you all appreciate me sharing, I'm probably creating competition for myself down the road sharing this stuff..

I can of course, leave the chipper attached and the box on the truck and blow right into the box also. but if I want the crane in another spot; that's when we unhook and put the box on the ground.

I agree 100000000%! lol

And the ground pressure on the 3055 is less than most bucket trucks! Dont forget the short outrigger span

Kbooms are sweet packages too!

Mike, Why don't K's need a counterweight, and why don't they need to be level when using, unlike a stick?

don't make any expensive decision fast.

spend the money to travel even, and visit different peoples set ups. It's nothing compared to the cost of buying something you will like. i researched quite a while i think, before i placed the order. 6 months maybe?

chip box capacity:(see picture of door figures, to prove it).

holds, 1173 ft³ = 43.4444 yd³

so, with the slant of chips down to the door, I figure on 37 cubit yards.

that's what i charge when i sell "playground" chips when this thing is full.

Now, if you are going to fill to the max, it has to be on the truck, or it would dump out as you pull it onto the truck. It can be about 2/3rds full and still pull it on without loosing any. or, we can jam in altura mats and it has stayed in.
