Knot

Hey I'm new to the rigging world and I'm not sure what knot to tie in one situation. When I'm going to drop a large log and I'm going to use a pulley or another friction device to slow the decent im trying to figure out what to tie to the tree so that I can attach my pulley to. Earlier today I just tied a running bowline with a butterfly knot on the mainline and hooked my pully and carabeaner to the butterfly knot. It worked but I have heard that you could just tie a cow hitch and hook to that?
I ran from my porta wrap up through a pulley to a half hitch up to a running bowline and cut below the half hitch so the log would be caught by the pulley and I could lower it slowly. ( Just wanted to try to make my writing understandable)

Thanks

A cow hitch works great for attaching a rigging block to the trunk; we use a deadeye sling (a rope 15-20’ long with a spliced eye (loop) on one end. Hook the block/pulley to the eye and tie a cow hitch around the trunk.

Your best resource for this is to start on YouTube and subscribe to some of the educational channels specific to tree work... videos LIKE THIS ONE (link) from ArborPod might be a bit old, but they're still very useful for researching basic techniques. They always have a subscribe button, and you can click on the channel name to see more videos from the same source.

There are tons of them. If you're willing to spend the time doing the research, there's a wealth of knowledge on there. The comments section will always be filled with idiots, but that's true of all YouTube videos.

Also, with the right keywords, you can search for very specific information... "using a sling to attach a pulley or block" would get you videos with more info than just knots to use with a deadeye sling... it would also get you info about loopie and whoopie slings, etc. which will give you a lot more options to consider.
