Klimair Double-End Lanyard

Location
Seattle
Just got this neat little double-ender from Gibbs. It grabs the rope from either direction. This means a lanyard can have a hook on both ends, and a climber can progress past limbs in safety by leapfrogging.

A friend of mine used one for a while. He didn't like it because he had to unweight it to move the slack. It is a very clever mechanism. Using hitches for slack adjusters seems to be hard to beat.

Here's a view of the Gibbs Klimair unassembled. The loop for attaching a carabiner is made of steel, and mounted on a swivel. The cam is hollow, made in two halves, that are bolted together with the swivel captured inside.

In case they loosen up, the swivel bolts are prevented from popping out by the sides of the shell.

The riffraff happened to drop in on Paul Sisson while he was making up a bunch of Mar-Bars, and we took these photos. Paul seems to think it has a sweet spot.

Jacob Bergquist, of Mountain Branch Tree Service of Grants Pass, Oregon, showed up with a prototype of this device at the Western Chapter ISA TCC in Sacramento in 2003. Since then, I heard thru the grapevine that he retired and moved to Thailand to do missionary work. Are you out there Jake?

oxman?
if it grabs both ways how does it move? and if it releases both ways what stop you you falling off the lanyard? /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif
peace and flexability!

"Canoe" rocker cam engaging in each direction of pull as it's alternate re-leases i believe.

i'd think that Tom's DEDA reeved thru each D from back would suffice. the space betwen the 2 tended friction hitches; making the 2 way safe. Though that 2way 'Canoe' Cam ; 2 waying from 1 position is pretty slick innovation.

its a 2 handed deal to adjust it. just put your thumb against it from the tension side and pull the line through it. ive got one of his proto types and mostly use it for small removals or small pruning where i cant be bothered to use a climbing line i can still stay tied in while moving around the tree.

oxman i dont think hes doing missionary work. he got a sailboat to live on and his family is getting to know his father in law and enjoying life a little
