Kevlar lanyard

I found a double braid with a kevlar core from Pelican rope works. It seems like it might be a better option than wire core. Lighter, non-conductive and real strong.
Has anyone tried it? Would it be splicable?

They only list the 600' reel for sale, that would be too
much for a lifetime of lanyards. Maybe a group buy?

I'm thinking its not cheap either, maybe its not practical.

I thought kevlar made sense for lanyard use as well and wondered why it isn't used. Again I could be wrong but I read that kevlar is self abrasive and loses strength from normal use.

So that's out then.
Thanks for dropping some knowledge.

I'm thinking I'll still put away the wire core. If your using
two lanyards when cutting you always have a back up.

Getting some kind of cover for the lanyard maybe is a better plan. even just for wear against the tree. Kevlar or just regular nylon tubing?

i have used just about every kind of rope for a lanyard and have not found that double braids wear any faster then 16 strands. i currently have a velocity lanyard and a 10 mm beeline lanyard both of which work great. my favorite lanyard is 10mm static line though. im using neropes kmIII with ocean poleyester in a vt and it works awesome. i have never seen the need for wirecore lanyards, proper chainsaw use and work positioning should make them obsolete in my opinion

livefreeordie,

Are you saying that you using KMIII for your lanyard? I've thought about getting some for my setup, but I've heard many times that knots are real bulky with it. How do you terminate your ends? How well does it work?

opposablethumb,

i do use kmIII for a lanyard and love it. the knots can be a bit bulky and can roll out, but i lock stitch my knot to prevent it from moving and am constantly checking it. i like how well you can flip it and how well my vt works with it. ill try to get a picture for you...

ive never used blue moon as a lanyard but velocity works very well. i havent had a 16 strand lanyard in a long time cause i prefer the smaller lighter lines. they fit me and my climbing style alot better but im sure 16 strands work just fine

You're onto something. It would be like chaps for a lanyard! It could stop tangle the saw up to keep cutting!

:) the neopro is a 11mm 16 strand , great stuff!

Been using snakebite for my lanyard for 2 years after retiring it as my access line. Little stiffer then the KMIII which is nice for spiking with. Not sure how well the KMIII holds up to a running saw bouncing off it but have seen the snakebite hold up suprising well from some hits that would have torn right through a normal 16 strand rope. Obviously not what was intended to happen but was comforting in seeing the results.

I used an 8mm Kevlar lanyard for about 9 months and loved it, used Tech Cord for the adjuster. I finally cut into with a handsaw and retired it. It wasn't good for flipping because the small diameter let it catch on bark and nubs easily but it was killer for canopy movement.

Cary, I've had the opposite experience, Neopro wore out fast and I've yet to wear out a double braid. In fact, Neo Pro was the only lanyard I've ever worn out... I always end up nicking the damn things before they wear out. I like Neopro... I just can't figure out what to use it for.

I don't think Kevlar replaces wire core. It has great properties but like all synthetics, it cuts easily under tension. Self abrasion is also a factor and I wouldn't use any covered tech fiber for more than a year of regular use.

I can't remember now, Atlantic Braids i think. It was yellow with red tracer; kernmantle so, not splice-able but it knotted well and i just lashed down the tail to keep it neat.
