Kernmaster wear

Kernmaster 11mm. mostly DRT. 10-20 trees per day for six months. Amazed at how well the cover has held up, barely fuzzy on the working ends. I really like the qualities of the rope. However...

Lately, occasionally when the rope is weighted and running through my hand I seem to feel "thin spots". When I try to find them again, I never can. If I go end to end as I flake the rope I will not feel any spots, only when weighted and only temporary. I never felt these when I climbed Poison Ivy. I am considering the rope compromised but I am looking for some information as to what may be going on inside, I thought the kernmantles where a sort of solid core, so I can't visualize what may be happening. Im also having a hard time reconciling how well the cover looks with the need to replace it but I do what I gotta do. Any thoughts appreciated.

Kernmaster's core is braided much like a double braid rope. While most kernmantle ropes have parallel core strands.. I have noticed that it stiffens up when weighted even after the weight it off of it will take shaking it out to feel normal..

Evo nailed it.

Kernmaster has a braided core, When loaded it will "unbraid" to absorb energy. Much like three strand will ravel when loaded. As long as the load is not extreme the braid will "return" to normal. The core materials have poor "memory" by design.

My guess is that your climbing/ascent system is temporarily "shifting' the core out of round. I have seen foot ascenders do this. As long as the diameter change is temporary, I would not be concerned.

I love the way kernmaster wears. Some of my lines have hundreds of hours with multiple climbers/styles and they inspect fine and look about 6 months old.
