Just rescued my first cat in a tree.

I registered with Dan's cat in a tree rescue website about 3 months ago and I received my first call last week. The cat was in the first crotch of a big oak tree about 45' up. I wore my gloves and put my pillowcase in my backpack. The cat had been in the tree for 3 nights when we got there in the morning. The weather had been very hot and i was worried about the cat being dehydrated. I needn't have been. Right about the time I was ready to go up the tree, Scratch turned around and peed all over my ropes and gear at the bottom of the tree. What's a guy to do? I told the owner the price just went up.

The cat was glad to see me and the rescue proceeded very smoothly. I put the pillowcase over his head and was going to wrap him up in it, but he had other ideas. Instead of struggling with and possibly dropping my first cat, I just grabbed him and got the heck out of the tree. Fun times and thanks to Dan Kraus for including me in his website.

Yes it's free
I'm not charging anyone to get a spot in the directory. But be aware it's not all fun and games with crowds of people singing praise upon you (sometimes it is). Cats will try to pee, scratch, bite, and run from you sometimes. And people will call you when you want to be doing something else.

My first rescue went great. The cat was dumped in the country for me or the coyotes to deal with. So I kept it. Then we found his sister, both super cats, would of kept them but the dog had other ideas. So my girlfriend took them to the SPCA, they got kennel cough, she found a home for them or they would of been killed. They were near death for 2 months getting eye dropper fed.

Basically the rescue was fun but the aftermath tore my girlfriend up. Just another feral cat to me, which I have a cure for, another dumb human caused problem.

What I learned is don't take them to the SPCA. Try to find a home yourself or deal with the problem after the girlfriend leaves.

I'll take up a cat carrier provided by the owner and keep the kitty in it til it's back inside so no pee issues. Dan's site is great.

Congrats on your first!

I think I got to about 200 cat rescues before I got pee'd on. It happens when you're on your way up. The cat has been holding it for days and gets so nevous seeing you that they let it go. stink o

In the first 25 I had two pee on me, two fight and bite, two at night, and four jumpers. Two were repeats. So I got a lot of the weird stuff early.

Sometimes the cat is totally quiet, and you can smell the pee before you even see the cat. For me, most are in fir trees, so dragging up a cat carrier would be problematic. I use a laundry bag (inside out technique, thanks Dan), and made up a special folding net for ones I think will fight.

Sometimes they come to you, but often they are just freaked out. Who is this strange, clanking, branch snapping creature approaching them? So often I just hang out with them till they calm down. Check out the eyes of this cat I got recently in a Sequoia. (3 pics)

Ive only gotten one call so far and the cat kept climbing away from me so i had to quit goin after it...the tree was a huge oak and when i got to where my rope was tied in i saw that the rope had been running through cat crap on the top side of the branch. I am getting paid in advance next time.

It seems for me all the cats get stuck on the weekends. I was called twice in the last two weeks. Unfortunately for them I'm not changing my plans to go save them. Poor buggers.
