judges & TCC\'s

Is there a rule book for judges at events?
- must watch climb and not talk to friends and family during a climb.
- know what an ascender is and how it is used
- stay at the event till it is over
- head judge of each event be held accountable for all the gear in the tree that is supplied for the competiton,
I could go on , it just seems that we are so desarate for vollunteers that we put up with some things that we are afraid to address because we could lose that one person next year.

Re: judges & TCC\'s

Glenn,

Here in MN we've had pretty high demands on the judges. The day before the TCC we have a judge's school in the AM. Gary Albig has set a very high standard of performance on the judges. during a climb there wouldn't be any chatter outside the ring.

We've gotten new people involved as techs, then into judging the timed events then into actual judging. Kind of like an apprenticeship. The competitors know that they must treat the judges with respect or they can get DQ'd on the spot. No grumbling or kicking dirt, throwing gear is tolerated. And they know that during the rule walk-through the day before.

Tom

Having a committee chair that CARES about the TCC will make all the difference.

Re: judges & TCC\'s

Tom, we have a great Chair who cares , Tim Busnell. He has so many responsibilities,and does a great job. we follow the ITCC rule book , but a page or two for the judges to read should be included. Umpires , referees all have written guidelines to follow.example;
--- it is not fair to any competitor if the judge is not focused on the climber at all times while the clock is running . Also a head judge should be responsible for his event , that it is run efficiently and safely. Head judge should be the “only” voice heard by the compettior. only the head judge can stop time . Head judge must understand the event he is judging. I know on a ITCC level this may not be a problem but on the chapter level it needs to be addressed. we follow the rule book of the ITCC and a page or two for the judges would be a plus.
The head judge climbing each event before a competiton is sort of extreme and would take up more vollunteer time . I agree though

Re: judges & TCC\'s

I know that asking the same vols to judge the same event yr after yr after yr can get boring. but this is a way to ensure equality judging from yr to yr. We have a guy in the MW that has done TL for 6 yrs now. Im not sure if HE wants is that way, but its kind of like his event.

I agree that the judges should at least be climbers. Also, it is up to every judge to read the event rules and know them like the palm of thier hand. the head should lay down the law at his/her event, both w/ the fellow jdgs and climbers.

There will always be indifferences. Mistakes, bad calls, etc. take place in every sport. Weve had our share in the MW in the last 2 yrs. BIG TIME! I wont go into it, but both happened in the results of the Masters.

Re: judges & TCC\'s

the standard of offiacls sets the standard of the comp!i think that the judges need experance in the event that they are doing and agree with the point that you rase, but making the do the evet would take up too much time. if you want judges guidlines in the rule book, which i think personaly would be a good idea, send your ideas into the rules committe there was talk of also putting in a " how to run a tcc" section if there was a demand

Re: judges & TCC\'s

The experienced climbers in each chapter have to make it a priority to make time for these events. It's very tough to get enough judges/volunteers for these events. The level of expertise in judging is a direct reflection of the level of participation and volunteerism in an ISA chapter.
