Joey Cornell with NRAT?

I first met Joey in 2004 at the TREE Fun(d) Redwood Climb in California. How he wangled his way onto that exclusive climbing roster, I never did find out. He dove right in - splicing eyes into the ends of the 7 spools of rope donated by Jaime Goddard of Yale Cordage. Joey sauntered up those redwood trees like he was born to climb.

A few months later, I hired on the crew in Rahway, New Jersey that was doing the quarantine work around an infestation of Asian Longhorned Beetle. Joey was working there with Mike Teti and Charley Wagner. We did lots of tight quarter removals using cranes, buckets and lowering devices.

The crew was holed up in an industrial district motel near the Merck chemical plant, which we clearcut. You can bet there were some stories told around that campfire. The weather was very hot & humid, even though it was still late spring.

One weekend, Joey took me out to Valley Forge National Monument across the river in Pennsylvania. There was wreckage of 200 year-old stone houses that were falling apart from age.

We had a picnic next to a humongous London Plane tree that is about 7' in diameter. This tree has an 85' long lateral limb that is held up by a pair of steel cables. Several other sets of twin cables were strung around the tree. Two lower limbs dipped down and rested on the ground, then rose up and extended out over the swampy bank of the nearby creek. Joey did a cool limb walk with the kids.

This video was taken on a beautiful spring day under that old sycamore tree.

Re: Joey Cornell with NRAT/IRAT?

I was given the extreme honor, by Joey's parents, to assist with spreading his 'spirit' and have been doing so for the last six months. Below is the current list of places that Joey and I have traveled since then:

• Las Vegas, NV
o The casino at Caesars Palace
o The fountain in front of the Bellagio
o The trees on Las Vegas Boulevard

• Gloucester, MA
o The Harbor
o The Crow’s Nest

• Columbia River Gorge, OR
o Multnomah Falls (upper and lower)

• Mount Hood, OR
o Stream up above snow line on the western slope

• Roanoke, VA
o The Roanoke Star, above the city

• Washington State
o Lake Easton State Park

• Post Falls, ID
o Spokane River

• Rainbow Flowage dam on the Wisconsin River, WI

• The Constellation, Inner Harbor Baltimore, MD

I plan on doing this at least until his next birthday, in January. I will continue to share the story, as long as you all are interested.

Be at peace Joey...

Tim

Wow, that is a lasting legacy to Joey Tim. Please keep us posted.

I was just down at Gloucester Harbor this past weekend. Had a few cold ones for Joey without even knowing it. Next time, I'll be sure to toast him.

Re: Joey Cornell with NRAT/IRAT?

My apologies for the delay in getting this out, but I was unable to access my address list while I was on the road. The text of the email was written on January 24, Joey’s birthday…

As I write this, I am remembering that today would have been Joey's 42nd birthday. A week ago yesterday marks 1 year since he left us. On that day, I was remembering him while hiking in Oregon. I hiked above one of the waterfalls that he and I "visited" last year, Multnomah Falls (594 feet high, one that he and I would have likely rappelled off of...).

I have and will continue to travel and spread his spirit when I can. I have attached a few pictures of places we have been to recently, a few details follow:

-We spent some time on Oregon's coast, and I found a place that he would have liked. It is called Devil's Churn. At high tide the water shoots up almost 80 feet. Somehow I could picture Joey jumping into the water and being shot up into the air...

-The next month I was in the Seattle area and we were able to visit the southern end of Puget Sound. Joey and I had a fascination with, and a fear of killer whales (they are big, lethal, and very smart). We always joked that if they ever figured out how to move on land, we were all in trouble. I was able to get to the south end of Puget Sound, out on a pier at a place called Dash Point.

-Thanks to Staci and a mutual friend (Ox), I was able to find the big sycamore that he and the girls found and played on and in at Valley Forge

-On my latest west coast trip I headed down to Muir Woods. We stopped at Cathedral Grove and jumped off of a little bridge into the stream that flows through the park

-Ended the trip on the deck of the lighthouse at Point Reyes National Seashore. A great spot; a few hundred feet above the rocky coastline with a nice wind to push his spirit out to sea.

I don't miss him any less a year later, but I think that I am done mourning him. I believe that there is a time for mourning, sadness, grief and pain because of our loss. I know that long ago he would have told us all to, "walk it off you big sissies" (he of course may have used stronger language.)

He and I still will have many travels and I will continue to share them with you all if you would like. Please make suggestions for places for us to visit if I haven't already hit them.

You are still with us brother; in our minds, our hearts, our memories, dreams and pictures. We are all a little better because you were in our lives. We have laughed deeper, climbed higher, and lived larger because of your presence. You are still with us and we will continue to live life to the fullest, remembering the good things that you brought to our lives.

As always, be at peace brother. You will be loved always, missed often, and remembered for as long as any one of us is still alive.

Hello,I am Joey's middle daughter {the one in red and blue} do you have any more pictures or videos of my father??

Joey can be seen in the yellow hardhat at the very end of this video. He is receiving the branch of the tree being lowered by the crane. He orchestrated the landing zone activities, then put on his gear & climbed the next tree, alternating with all of us climbers.
