Thanks for the updates, guys!

Huge congrats to Mark for his third crown. What a trooper! His past titles were 1997 and 2001. Talk about longevity!!

Looking forward to seeing (and shooting) my third ITCC next yr in Brisbane. I'm hoping to make the trip and then go down to Melbourne to hang with Graeme and maybe Ace, then on to NZ to do some skiing. Here's Mark in Hawaii entering the MC tree, a 140 foot crown spread monkey pod tree [image]http://www.treebuzz.com/forum/download.php?Number=237623[/image]

Yes blue sky white clouds here for hours but someone saw a storm on radar. so after sitting inside all morning the day was blown off.

someone is miscalculating and overblowing imo risk, a common problem in the tree biz...

Easy to make that call while sitting in front of a computer and window watching the weather.
The right call was made. I was there as an AR scoring judge. Trying to get competitors to compete on Saturday would not have been pretty. Muddy ropes, boots, contestants.

On another note: ITCC judges, judging events without safety glasses on; bucket technicians in the bucket with a 'work positioning' harness on (no dorsal or bucket belt). ISA is the secretariat of the Z133.1 and they can't even follow their own rules. Pathetic! I lost respect for the ISA this trip.

I'd like to see Jared take it :) he is on my facebook and seems like a good guy

He's a great guy! Our Chapter is very proud of him. You never get tired of seeing Jared's gear tricks and of course his happy smile. His family is amazing too. They all volunteer a lot for our Chapter and CAA. Very incredible people.

Thanks BB for the play by play. THat was awesome! I was dying to know. And congrats to Mark for his win!

Im not surprised. They write their own rules and follow what they want. They lost my respect (and my money), after 2006 when they gave the MN chapter the proverbial shaft.

Congrats Mark and Josephine!

Congrats to all who competed and great job! ... Jared , we're proud of your achievement! You represent our Chapter very well!

Later in SO-CAL!!

re weather comments, i'm ignorant of tcc organizing; but it was hugely ironic that such a beautiful day was wasted. mud was an issue??>???
mainly I was bummed that I couldn't see the men's final, but glad I could see the women go at it--they have really come a long way baby!
As for lack of ppe, surprising. seems more like individual, not organizational errors.

On another note, I was also glad to see the comp trees were not liontailed as bad as they have been in the past.
Closer to real life, and a much better demonstration of the purpose of climbing trees--arboriculture. o yea, that... and the 12' 2-section pole was such a pita--maybe replace with a telescoper?

Congrats to Mark; I knew he was juiced--he just about broke my hand shaking it!

The bucket truck issue was noticed by lots of people. I think they assumed people would not notice but when you get rules pounded into your head it glares out at you when you see people jump into a bucket without the proper PPE (especially the organization that makes those rules). It was not an isolated incident. I do not think there was a proper bucket harness on sight! Other than that, it was highly impressive feat to pull the whole thing off in one day. I was highly upset about Saturday being cancelled as it kind of messed up my plans but after seeing the arboretum under 7 inches of rain, I think it was the right call too.

Congrats to all competitors, and to all winners. Well with 7 inches of rain I think we found out how much rain is needed to keep climbers out of the trees. Hmmm wonder if you can throw line from a boat lol.

It's probably a bad ruling to begin with!

When I do bucket work I wear a climbing harness and am tied in with enough climbing rope/vt hitch to get to the ground. Hanging by your back is only going to save a person sometimes.....getting to the ground fast is equally or more important. I let very little slack develop in my tie in system and of course it is easily adjustable. It also makes for a quick leap into the tree. I do not suggest such a system for non climbers.

At secured footlock we opened with a meeting about calling each other out on safety violations. It was interesting to see each other's approaches to what few we had. (the occasional eye protection warning). Great bunch over there this year! I was proud to be part of it.

I feel your pain Norm. I saw a few things at the Western Chapter last year at Castaic Lake that blew my mind. Lion tailed trees, using questionable attatchment points for belay on secured footlock, half cracked limb allowed to remain in the tree. Who am I to argue with these people though? Im no NORM HALL. You should have told everyone that you had ran out of lollipops and then proceded to whoop some asses.
Dont get me wrong people, I feel so blessed that these events exist and dont pretend to understand all the work that goes into it, Im just saying......
Ok, I admit it, I dont know what I was trying to say.

I often hesitate to say anything at an event when I see a violation that's not in my work station but I KNOW I need to be courageous and tactful and say something. At a chapter event last year a greenie pointed out someone wagging a chainsaw around one handed from in a bucket truck. The someone? a 2 time champion given to hot tempered episodes...so I said nothing and I still regret it. I know that's not what the thread is about. Venting but I also want to remind all judges, techs, volunteers and climbers that our conduct at these events is regarded as example and I hope none of you ever has to teach by the experience I now have to.
