ISA Municipal Arborist Exam

The exam was difficult IMHO. Most of the questions had answers that could have all worked for the situation, it was not black and white like a biology or ANSI question. I didn’t study anything but the book but I did go to a workshop put on by our local ISA chapter, which was helpful in that it was repeatedly stressed to not approach the questions like you would at your city/village, answer how the book would want you to.

I feel like if you were a contractor taking the exam you would have a better shot than someone who is in an administrative forester position at a municipality because your experience there will cloud your potential answer.

Anyways, I’m not complaining. If I studied better or more maybe I would have thought it was easier. I passed still though but I felt it could have gone either way when I walked out.

Also worth mentioning, ISA seems to have settled into their new hq and caught up because I took the written exam on Wednesday, June 26th and received the email telling me I passed on Saturday, July 6.

O, and--contractor experience can also bias judgment; not sure what difference that makes. It's cloudy either way!

I'd like to see the questions more straightforward but that's just me.

I'm desperate to find study materials that actually prepare you for the ISA Municipal Specialist exam. I've take the exam twice reading the study guide in entirety and mastering all questions at the end of each chapter. I've also read all the urban forestry articles from Arborist News and still found the exam had very ambiguous questions throughout with confusing multiple choice answers. I must be missing something...it's also very frustrating since I've taken many professional exams including AICP, MPA and FEMA's CFM with no problems! Please let me know if anyone has any resources that can help pass this thing! thx-

Sometimes to resolve the ambiguity it helps to stop thinking about what is absolutely correct, and go with the flow of what looks accepted or expected.

And keep taking practice tests, that's the resource that I would advise.

Thanks for the input Sir. do they have practice tests other than the study guide? I don't see any on the ISA website.

I took it at a computer lab in 2015 and I remember leaving the lab not knowing how I did but I ended up passing. I just studied the study guide and winged it. There are a lot of pick the best answer type questions where I used the process of elimination and picked what I thought was the most thorough answer.
