Is it oaky to.....

It might damage the upper sheave. A carabiner would be the weak point in the rigging system, which is a no go. The rigging rope itself should be the weakest component. Most blocks are 80KN MBS or more, and we use slings significantly bigger and stronger than the rope itself. Biners are 20 something to 50kn usually. Iron Wizards are 70kn but still you’d be abusing the block.

Curious why you would want to do this though. I’d be more comfortable running the rope through a clevis or two or just using the block as it’s intended. Also consider a couple ring slings. Xring or similar make.

Best I can say is to use the appropriate termination... many logging style blocks have a Clevis style yoke closure. I wouldn’t hesitate using an appropriate clevis (or clevis swivel) as needed.
I’d never consider doing the same with a ISC aluminum block, or damm..

So in short, it depends..

Blocks are designed to be utilized with textile connections. If you want to use a carabiner as a connection, that's how pulleys are designed to be connected.

Not all blocks. But yes most “Arborist” blocks are
I wouldn't presume to speak beyond the realm of arboriculture, as that is where I'm expected to live, work and provide expertise. In that context, I've yet to see an arborist block made to be connected with anything other than textiles.

I’ve used them regularly within the world of arboriculture. With another arborist in fact
