iPod of other mp3 player?

I want to get a player for my 6 year old being that CDs will be obsolete in a few years. Do I follow the crowd and go with the iPod or is there another mp3 player out there that is just as good. I really don't think he will download 1000 songs to start with.

Go with something that has a flash memory. The hard drive units can skip. If got one with 512Mb built in flash and an expansion slot for SD cards. You can get those as high as 2G or more. On nice pruning jobs I climb with mine. Nice to have music on a 2-3hr tree without repeats.

I have a RIO it has flash internal plus a SD slot love it, durable as hell and cost about $115 not as flashy as an Ipod, but i can take it anywhere and do anything with it.

Mangoes,
are you talking a mini disc type player or a unit you download music on to? My girlfriends daughter wants an IPOD for christmas, but its hard to figure out all the different models. Do you really get what you pay for? meaning do you really have to buy a MAC or are there other brands that are just as good?

Treewhisperer, most of the large capacity machines 5G and bigger are hard drive units. Meaning they have an internal disk that has to spin to load up data. These can occasionally skip. Any flash unit with expansion is better IMO, 1G SD card holds a couple hundred songs. I will keep 4-5 cards with different mixes, instead of the 40G harddrive unit.
