Improving saw longevity

Not being picky... just keeping me honest. Thanks

Stihl encourages a 50:1 mix nothing less nothing more PERIOD! On newer saws with all the EPA restrictions AND with the new Ultra oil I wouldnt run anything more than 50:1 as anything richer will carbon the hell out of everything.

Ummmm,wrong....I run full synthetic Mobil Racing 2T mixed at 36-1 in all my saws and they are clean as a whistle. I've never run 50-1 and will never do so. Same with many pros that I know that run fully woods modded saws.

It is best to anticipate when a saw is running low and stop to refuel, thus there's no chance of a lean condition developing, hwever brief it might be.

Lotsa good tips here, except about spark plugs. They rarely go bad, or wear out. I have two year old saws running original plugs.....

Controlling heat is most important for saw longevity.
Besides having the proper carb adjustments--if anything, a tad rich is safe.

Things that help: running ported mufflers..reduces combustion chamber heat, and gives 15-20% improvement in power and cut speed.

Keep the saw clean..everything.....inside the starter cover...filters and carb box area, bars. Also, keep the cooling fins clean--scrape them off with a something with a good edge on it like a file....

And, never run a dull saw..makes it work too hard, get hot, and wear out.
