Ian, THAT is why I like the wrench...for crazy rope angles....like this elm, in Canada...storm damage...noticed a blown out top at the last minute on my way down and up I went into adjacent leaderIMG01463-20140605-1429.webp ...dodgy redirect and all ( on stub, was just using to come down )...redirected, did the work and came down...probably would have thought twice with a runner....

Optical illusion Frank, that picnic table was soooooooo far .....LMAO...probably get choked by the base tie, lol....this really was not a very good scenario..but I did feel confident that it would hold, just could not make any mistakes.....

I hear y'all regarding comfort zone. I've got a bone, but am still reaching for hitch cord when I am doing anything that isn't very simple stuff. I hope to get there with mechanicals in time, but it ain't today.

Nice pic Swing. Yeah those elms can be a pain in the ASS. i did a elm removal last spring thought i would have the top down in half a day. Took me two days. the limbs went way out and came back and crossed over other branches. not your typical cut and lower. Definitely steep angles also.

The OP asked "... what ... and why?", so ...
FWIW: Rope Wrench ... but, they ALL work and git-r-dun -- personal preference rules.

However, of all those listed (even RADS), the Rope Wrench is the only one that adds ZERO links in the life support chain.

"A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link."
Some systems listed have as many as two-dozen parts. A failure of a link in the life-support chain may mean life-support failure -- maybe disaster.

The Rope Wrench simply, and ingeniously, makes a hitch 'descendable'. (KISS - Keep I Simple Sweetie)

... just my 2¢

... this ought to be fun ...

This is a really, really great point, that I have never before seen someone mention. Not even Kevin Bingham himself, if I recall correctly.

This was a really astute and profound observation, and I thank you for your post. The whole idea of looking at the number of potential failure points possible on each device or system just never occurred to me.

I would counter that with a question. What if the connecting link was stronger, by far, than any other system component and could not be made to fail without destroying the weaker system components?

Dave, thanks for chiming in when you did. This is a really good point, also.

I do most removals with a rope runner....but pruning or spreading trees with multiple leaders....it wrench time baby....

Hey, swingdude, I just noticed this post. Could you explain your reasoning for the statement above? It implies that the Rope Runner may not be so good for really high angle stuff, is that what you are trying to say? Thanks in advance for any answers you choose to give.

My preference is mostly based on my srt learning curve, which is pretty much 50% wrench and the rest bulldog bone.
The biggest factor to me is the ease of rope attachment. I'm constantly throwing my tail on a neighboring upright lead, then taking my bone of and attaching to my now redirected tail. That, and compared to the little (play, not work) time I've had on the runner and uni, the comfortable and natural hand positioning.
I forced myself thru slow climbs on it, removals, prunes, whatever so that I got efficient with it quickly.

And I f'n did too

So I will always pick the wrench on hard climbs
..always it is just bomb proof...you can wrap that fucker around branches ...try that fuckery with a runner...in wide spacious trees a runner is sweet...but jungle climbs I love my wrench....

Sorry swing, I just have the most experience on my runner. I haven't had a whole lot of time on the wrench, but I will say that I like it a bit more in the right situations.

Nah was giving you creep that it's gold....nothing wrong with preferring a runner...I have 2 with nuff use just not my go to on difficult climbs and definitely not when it is wet...don't climb in wet conditions much but occasionally I get caught in a down pour..
