I think I started splicing on the wrong rope...

Just starting to try splicing myself and got a bag 'o rope for some scraps to work with (thanks Treestuff!) and I picked up a 12-strand Yale line (XTC?) to start with out of the bunch, thinking it looked like a more forgiving selection. I think I may have made a poor choice for my first attempt, as I'm struggling. What little info I can gather, it seems like this rope is not hand-spliceable...can anyone confirm or deny this? Maybe suggest a rope construction that might be worth starting on if it is indeed un-spliceable by hand? And if there is a great place to look for more info on getting into splicing, even buried somewhere in this forum, can anyone suggest where to look?

1/2 Allgear neolite 16 strand is super easy to splice if you want to try a 16 strand. Any of Allgear's double braids are super easy to splice, a great place to start, IMHO.

Slowly. Currently stumped on getting the taper developed properly. May try and find some advice from a few novice splicers at work. I feel like I'm making a small mess of things, probably even beyond the taper, though I feel like that's probably part of the learning process... Any advice handy? Using a retired section of 11.7 Yale double braid that I used as a lanyard til a rigging line got on it and glazed it pretty good...

Well first: used rope is more difficult, but totally possible.

Re: the taper problem. I am assuming you are talking about the cover taper, correct? What tapering pattern are you using? Do you have a layer of tape on the end while you are pulling strands? Is the braid trying to completely come apart when you pull the last strand pair? If that is the case, I'd say either leave that last pair in, or pull the last pair after you bury (but I'd say leave it in).
