I look too young

As the true sage once said Holle, great men always come out in the top!

Alternatively though, a family elder said it best, "God only gave us so many hormones and if those guys want to waste them on growing hair..."

Think of it this way - the older you get the more you can charge, justifiably. Just absorb while time flys by, your day is coming. Patience builds virtue. Things take time. Instant high returns is for MBA's with no sense of ethics or morals.

i didnt have grey hair until iraq. now that im out of the army i have a beard and man.. talk about depressing..26 and grey patches all over it, not to mention my hair, its grown out too and going grey.

Forget about looking young being an issue. It seems many customers like to watch like hawks for a while. But focus on the positive. If you enjoy the career, consider yourself lucky to have figured it out early in life. As a kid I was climbing trees daily and always higher and faster than my freinds, and jumping out of them from signifigant heights as well. I wish I would have went srtaight into this trade following high school. I had been told about the certified arborist credentials and thought it sounded perfect. But I didn't have the confidence. I thought a government job was the answer. Well they and union jobs suck bad as it turns out. And all the hacks in my area are old men who should be watched or run off the property. I think that a person is what they will remain basically by about age 6. So you is what you is, and many customer understand this.

I used to have that problem too. I started doing treework and bidding my own jobs when I was 17 and a senior in high school. Now Im 33 and not working with the crew as much anymore. In addition to actually being young I even looked young for my age. Guess ive put on a few pounds and it made me look older so I usually dont get that anyore. My favorite comeback/joke when people would ask about my age was always... Hey, when im 70 I will still be able to pick up 50 year old chicks! At least it makes me laugh :)

not so much a joke on my side but "Old enough to have grand kids, young enough to not want any yet!"

I'm 23 and own my own company and have a beard since I was 19 and still get it. Most often people think I'm because I'm young I shouldn't charge much Pisses me off sometimes. Keep cool and try to explain that your not getting everything... you do have expenses. Certs seem to help and most of all know your stuff and be professional . That will impress even more if they thought you might be a little young.

While it doesn't make sense to pay a younger or older person a different rate, I think people somehow have it in mind at times. I think that a customer on the fence will be more inclined to support the family man, all else being equal.

If it comes up in conversation that you're married or a parent or a homeowner or helping out your family, or charitable wood bank, in addition to your own livelihood, it won't hurt.

All else being equal, a person is most likely to want to business with a liberal if they're liberals, conservative if they are conservative, black if they're black, white if they're white, married if they're married, bird-lovers, dog-lovers, sheep-lovers...ah, wait, that's something else.

If you can connect with them on something, sports, politics, religion, you will have a better shot at getting the job.

Age can't be changed, but you can try to pick up on things from their house/ car/ license plate bracket/ fishing boat that might help you get ahead.

I find that too, when customers find out I'm married with two kids, they suddenly have a lot more to talk to me about, and they're willing to listen to me about their trees, instead of asking when the boss is showing up.

I bet you're still getting carded when you go to the bar, James!

Definitely connect with the client first with some shared interest. That's your job when you go to meet clients. You're not a climber or a "tree guy". You're a salesperson and consultant at that point. Learn how to sell first. We will always have some sort of obstacle to overcome that has nothing to do with tree work.

I think I was too.
