How often do you foot lock into trees?

No way, the old kevin would have been still trying to isolating my line while the new kevin is acending.. The new me is already making cuts and has made a good mess while the the old kevin would still be takeing off the kleimheist and pulling up the splice and tying a hitch etc... It has been since the last comp that I footlocked on doubled rope.

It would be cool to have a me vs me competitition... the stronger me vs. the smarter me. I have never been timed but i would bet head to head my SRT and footlocking times are fairly similar. the footlock maybe being 10 seconds faster on 50 feet. I will try to set up 50 feet and get timed.

Why Foot-lock when there are so many SRT configurations? I have not locked nor Double lined in over a year. I am addicted to spinning the web and it only gets better everyday!!!

Single Line On!!!

every time i get into trees where the first limb is over 30' or so...which, believe it or not, in south kakalak is just about every day. sometimes i rope walk. don't have the gear for the rads or the uni yet. just one side job away. don't tell my employer! being 30 years old and under 170lbs. i guess ft.locking comes easy. whatever is easy on the brain is easy on the body. we americans take on too much mental stress. we live guilty. i feel and drink just like i did when i was 18. if i want to climb when i am 65 i will climb when i am 65. there is no magic formula, it is all between your ears and your legs. if you have the will and the balls the sky is the limit. i'd rather cash out on my prusik than the icu ward.

highclimber, I like your spirit, but just remember what Nietzsche DID NOT SAY, “That which does not kill you, can cause you A LOT of pain.”

Work smart, and I’m sure that you will still be climbing when you are 65 years old. Just don’t try and fool yourself and think that you’ll have the body of an 18 year old, but you can definitely have the mind and spirit of one, which can be a great thing too!

I was chatting with a bud and asked this same question. His responce was good " Footlocking is one of the basic tools you have to get up in a tree. From there on you find more efficient ways to get up in a tree, but when all else fails head back to your basics and refresh yourself." Course this is the same guy that hates to footlock, but still does it to keep in mind he can still do it when the need is there.

Agreed on all fronts, Chris. I try not to harbor too many delusions of granduer. All I have to say about Nietzsche is he wrote some ballsy rants, grew a great beard but in the long run he was quite the nut job. He probably could have saved himself a lot of pain if he heeded your advice. Superman has never been more than a comic book character. I take great pride in being a climber and all around tree man. Being savy and safe is a definite must. Then again, as the Buddhist say "all life is suffering". So might as well choose your poison. More people die on their way to work than at work. So, don't go quietly into that good night. Foot lock your rope all the way to heaven and descend like a bat out of hell. On all the proper gear with all the proper PPE of course!

FL is OK if you have to. Is there easier ways to the top? Many would say yes. Being 30 second slower on a acent into tree yet easier on body parts. I go for easier on bod. Twenty years from now the bod will still work being sixty plus.
Then again you guys\gals could just use a ladder! What the heck is the problem! Just walk up the first 30plus feet.

Still footlock every tree I climb thats big enough. Tried the pantin and it felt unnatural. Suppose if I climbed big trees every day I would employ a more advanced ascending technique, but these days I'm lucky to climb a nice big tree (non topped) where footlocking is possible, so I enjoy it when I can.

every day with my kong dualcender, if that counts,, " its back upped in my mind,,

I hope your backing that kong up in more then your mind! Takes me 1 minute to tie on a back up prussik on my kong.

Never tried footlocking. 45 years of bodythrusting has my shoulders aching though, so i prefer, in order, ladder and short airhumps, wraptor for the long verticals, marbars, pantin.

Actually my top preference these days is to watch guys like Wood and Wyatt do the climbing for me! :)

Trying to footlock as many trees a possible because got my first comp this year i 4 months. Started to learn it last spring when prepering for my first comp. On very long ascents i use srt. 15-20m ascent on FL isent a problem. Getting myself a kong ascender so i can do even longer ascents. Want to try a system that i found on youtube where Mark is footlocking two lines that were tied together with a alpinebutterfly at the top of the tree and the other end of one line was tied at the base of the tree. No need for isolating a limb then....
