How many saws do you need?

I would say get yourself a climbing saw like a stihl 0200 and if your just getting in the buisness just get a 460 with 20" bar on it. If and when you start getting into bigger wood add on a 66 with at least a 32". That should hold you over just fine.

I agree with BigJon and his choices in saws.

I run a Stihl MS200T climbing saw and an 044 ground saw. The only thing that I don't like about the 044 is that it doesn't have a decompression button.

My next saw will be the 460.

whitinsville, i appreciate your ambition! but please get some serious training and info. before "climbing" up a tree with a saw! i'm not being condecending, just concerned. a guy died in my home town last summer taking down a 8 inch diameter elm tree. he only fell 9 feet! train, keep learning, and obey limits and ansi standards and you'll prabably be good.

Whitinsville,

Follow Glens advice on getting training and experience with chainsaws before investing big dollars.

Check out www.ArborMaster.com for any upcoming training sessions in your area. They offer a good beginner course on chainsaw safety, maintenance and felling techniques. The courses are usually 2 days long and run at about $400. Well worth the effort and piece of mind.

All the best with your endeavours.

Kevin.

Yes, I agree about the training 100%. No offense taken to anyone who suggested training; it would be foolish of everyone to encourage someone who is obviously new to the field to climb a tree with no experience. I was glad to see that people are thinking things through before posting advice.

I already looked into ArborMaster - they'll be running Climbing 1 and Felling 1 in my area in August. I'm planning to attend.

While I'd like to run my own business some day, I'm actually trying to find a job with another company at this point just to get some experience.

In the mean time, I figure I might as well learn as much as I can. Thanks to everyone here, there is always more knowledge than one can possibly soak up. I just keep reading when I find time, and little by little I'm learning things.
